Just an item of interest: I noticed that PC-Club, a semi-national vendor, is now offering desktop and notebook systems with Linux pre-installed! I don't know which distro it is, but it seems like a really good sign. Perhaps (hopefully) other vendors will follow...

When I was on holidays in Germany last year one of the first things I noticed was that a lot of the PC's in local stores had Linux pre-installed. I was even told, I don't know if it's true, that the German government supports the use of Linux financially.

I saw this in a paper catalog, but their website is http://www.pcclub.com

In looking around their site, it looks like this may be an option on all of their complete systems. If you click their "Build System" link, there are a number of OS options avaiable including a couple of flavors of RedHat.

The last I knew Wal-mart online sold Mandrake in certified computers, at a great cost.
