Hello all.

I am an artist who is very interested in Open Source software and Linux. Up to this point, I have been using Mac’s for the past 5 or so years, with an assortment of MS-DOS and windows machines before that. I am by no means computer phobic, but I would not consider myself expert on any platform either. Up to now, I have used computers as a means to an end, rather than exploring how they work in depth.

Now that I have stumbled up Linux, I sense that all that is about to change.

I have two projects in the works, one of which seems to be under control, and the other that I could use some advice on…

The first project involves me “reclaiming” old, discarded computers here at my campus (I am currently perusing my masters degree) and installing Linux on them. This being an art school, almost all the machines I have gotten a hold of are old PPC’s (mostly 7300/200’s) with 2 to 6 gig hard drives. They all have at least 128MB RAM. The idea is to set up a more casual “anything goes” computer lab where people can host their own web sites, email, whatever. I have support from the school, but as of yet, I am still looking for a location to put this in. I welcome any advice or comments you all might have on this project.

I mention this because it directly relates to an animation display that I am trying to put together. I am trying to display a series of flash animations on about 4 computer monitors. The premise of the display is that the action moves from one monitor to another in sync. Since I already have a slew of machines and monitors, I’m guessing that if I have one fast machine (which I am currently putting together, I should be able to use it as server display X windows on the older machines (which would act as x terminals). The machine I am building is an AhtlonXP 2000+ with 1 GB DDR RAM. Having never done this before, I have a few questions.

1. Should this work?
2. I realize that there is no flash player for Linux PPC, but will the Macs work as X terminals if the animations are being served from an x86 box?
3. Is there a less involved way of doing this that still involves Linux?

Sorry for such a long post, and thanks in advance for any help/advice.

Cheers,

Ben

I have flash working with Gentoo for PPC. The only problem is that Mozilla craps out on a pretty regular basis. The package is gplflash
