Just want to share this ... if there is a
better (linux) way to do it, please tell me.

This is how I install Linux and windows
in my computer:

1. Delete all old partition.
Using MS-DOS6.22 Boot floppy and FDISK

2. Create partition as follows:
a. Primary Dos (33% of 20gb HDD)
this is for MS-Windows 2000 Pro
b. Extended Dos (33%); Logical 100%
this is for my Documents and data
- leave the remaining 34% untouched
until MS-Windows installation done.

3. Install MS-Windows and restore all
my document and data.

4. Boot using RH8 CD-ROM and install
Use disk druid to create linux partition
and swap partition.

5. I choose Grub loader as boot manager.

6. I mount my Extended dos so I can open
my documents from both operating system.
Mozilla mail database can be shared with
this methods too.

Additional: Yesterday I install RH9
- first I try to upgrade RH8 to RH9, the
installation indicator shows it will take
more than 2 hours for the whole installation
process. So I do the following steps:

7. Backup all my Linux data to Extended dos area.

8. Reboot PC using MS-DOS Floppy and deleted all
my linux partition. (it can be done from RH9
installation using disk druid too).

9. Reboot from RH9 CD-ROM and clean install RH9
(see step 4 above).

Hope it helps

Wow seems like a bunch of extra unnecessary steps to me.

1. Use boot disk to clear any and all traces of non-Windows OSes (Windows installer will not always do this adequately).

2. Insert and boot from Windows CDROM.

3. NT based OS don't require a DOS boot disk. Use the Windows installer to creatte your primary partition and second data partition. You could always skip the second partition and choice to create it as soon as Windows installation is complete using Disk Mgt.

4. Leave the unpartitioned space as is Install Windows to primary (labeled C:\).

5. Install Windows and finalize system installation include any and all third party drivers.

6. Install GNU/Linux distro of choice.

7. Mount necessary volumes.

yes that’s a better way to do it, but I always use my ms-dos floppy to prepare hard drive before installing it. :-) just my way to do it. Thanks

Same here, ever since MS-DOS all M$ programming has been too buggy to trust with important things like partitions.
I've heard of people using the Win2k partitioner, and clicking on one thing, making no changes; the OS crashed(froze, halted) and when they rebooted it had deleted the main partition.
I suppose they could be lying, but I'd believe it :). Besides, fdisk is so familiar.....
