My Smoothwall router machine runs iptables.

I assume then, as long as all clients on this side of the router are friendly with each other ;) , that the clients don't need to have iptables services running on them.

Is that a correct assumption?

I only need protection from outside, past the router.

thanks

Behind the router you have created a private network that is for the most part unaccessible from the outside world, unless the computer behind the router initializes the connection.. However you could still have firewalls running on the machines just in case.. Like if you are going to forward ports to any of the machines you may want to set up filters so only certain IP blocks can access the machine, but for the most part the router will take care of most everything for you. I run firewalls on all my machines, but its up to you and how paranoid you are.
