Ok...I am completely new to web hosting and such. I have created some web pages for my work, but I need to test them out completely before I show them they work.

So I set up apache, and then downloaded the front page extensions...that worked great.

Where do I publish my web to? I use to put everything in /var/www/html but my frontpage extensions are in a different folder. I tried publishing my web to the front page folder, but it came up with an error saying unable to create 'vti_pvt'

I don't have a problem reading the manual if I could just find it. Any suggestions or tips I would really appreciate this!

Thank you so very much!!!

I'm not sure if you been to this website...

http://www.joshie.com/projects/apache-frontpage/

I was able to configure my server and publish a site, but I when I upgraded to Apache 2.0.X, I dropped it. It's not really worth losing a few hair...

Okay I read over that site....seems like it would work, but not really what I am looking for.

I downloaded the extesions, that worked fine..downloaded apache 1.3.19 and that went fine..I come up with this error when I do 'sh fp_install.sh' Here is what it is...

I think you missed something or didn't point the right directory but... Here's Howto installation step by step... Just look for sample installation link...

and this one is the main page...

I didn't point it to the right directory...after I sent this, I redid it, and looked a little more...here is where I am stuck at now...

Note: Local version of Apache must use the FrontPage Apache patch.
See http://www.microsoft.com/frontpage/ for more details.

Note: If you have not installed the root web then you need to do it now.

I am not sure what else to do...or where to go..I will read that link you have supplied...thanks.

Ok.. things are start to come back now...

Check your httpd.conf and check this section below.....

<Directory />
Options FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride None
</Directory>

Change AllowOverride from "None" to "All"

rerun the script again

FYI: I think you're gong to get another error just like this one. So get familiarize with httpd.conf coz you're going to have to modified your httpd.conf again..

Just let us know how it turns up...

I'm not trying to be sarcastic, I'm incredibly new to the whole designing a website thing, I really want to know:
Why would anyone want to use Frontpage?
True, I haven't used it in a year or two (I'm not even sure what version they are on now), but from what I remember, it was a really bad program.

ps - nemesiox, It's good to see someone else from LA here!

I did change the AllowOverride = All. Everything worked pretty well. I am still trying to figure out where to publish my web to.

As for using Front Page, it's there, and that's why I use it. I don't have the money for Dream Weaver or Flash MX or something like that. Also that is what the company I use, uses. I hope to get to Dream Weaver or something....

Thanks for everyone's help.

Dude.. You're getting there, but it's going to get more complicated. Please read the whole manual and find out how to activate the administrator account and add a regular user account. Also, you got to have a mail server working...

Anyway if you want to publish your web without the full functionality of frontpage extension, that's really easy...

First, you can do it using ftp then you have to copy the whole directory and so on.... I mean doing chmod to some files..

Second and the easiest one...

I configured my Samba to be able to acces my httpd root (ex: /srv/www/htdocs). Like able to map it... Then when I ready to publish, I point to a folder and bam....

Also, the reason I did this is for my other user... I just create each one of them a Virtual host and the point their httpd doc to home directory...

If you want to do the second option, please let me know I will try to help you out...

Case1984 -- Cool dude... What kind of distro are you using?

I have already set up a samba server, and I can put my stuff there, I want the front page extensions so that I am able to do what I do at work, but not on a win2k network.

During the installation, it asked me if I wanted to set up a Root web, I said yes. I went through, it asked me the admin password for frontpage, I used administrator, it asked me for a password, I used password. This is generic stuff, it's on my intranet, no way out. I am not worried about someone hacking me or something.

This is just up for testing purposes only.

I knew that I needed an e-mail server set up. I was looking for 'sendmail' but didn't find anything.

One thing at a time. Thanks for all of your help.
