external USB Hard disk (Maxtor 5000 DV ) unabale to mount

I get myselv an external hard disk,so i wrot first
lsusb ,and redhat 8.0 found him ,and he was spisefiad like a scsi

bInterfaceClass 8 Mass Storage
bInterfaceSubClass 6 SCSI
bInterfaceProtocol 80 Bulk (Zip)
i made change in fstab and added sda1,and made mnt dir. but i can't mount and get next masseg

[root@localhost root]# mount /dev/sda1
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda1,
or too many mounted file systems
(aren't you trying to mount an extended partition,
instead of some logical partition inside?)
any body can help me

Have you setup partitions and formated the drive yet?

How do you want it partitioned. How many and what kind of filesystem do you want?
