I recently downloaded the 3 cd's for the latest version of Mandrake (9.1). I experienced a problem with installation from the last Mandrake release (9.0) and was hoping it would be gone this time, but it wasnt. I checked many of the online resources, but unfortunately, the problem wasnt resolved. Whenever I install the Mandrake Linux OS, it takes a very long time for it to do it. For example, it took me 4 hours to install 9.1. During the graphical setup, I usuallly wait somewhere from 15-30 minutes between each dialoge box. I have never experienced this problme before 9.0, does anyone knwo whaat might be wrong?
I have a Dell Dimension XPS T700r. PIII 700 Mhz. 256 SDRAM.

One of the Mandrake installer's virtual consoles has the current status of the logs on it. I think it's VC 4, but I could be wrong. Hit Ctrl-Alt-F4 from inside the installer, and see if anything is getting logged that might explain the delay.

I keep getting this message throughout the install, and I think it may be the reason for my installation problems:
<4>usb_control/bulk_msg:timeout
Does anybody know what that's saying? I got it all throughout the install when I pressed Alt-Ctrl-F4.

Judging by the message, your USB Controller is somehow causing problems. What USB controller do you have? Since there have been steps in the recent kernels to get USB 2.0 compliance, my guess is you have a 1.x USB compliant controller and for whatever reason, yours is not backwards compatible. Try disabling your USB in your BIOS(if you can), and see if the problem is still there. There also may be an option for Legacy USB in your BIOS also, try switching that option if it's there.

It is really hard to tell what went wrong.
I had a similiar experience installing Suse 8.0. I have a 750 External UsbDrive. In the installation when it was probing the ports, it will stay there forever.
So try uninstalling all the usb devices that are extra.(cameras, etc)
If your keyboard and your mouse are USB, try the installation using them as PS/2. What I mean is buy a USB to PS/2 converter, and use the PS/2 ports.
Good luck!!

You can stop the delay on installation by pressing F1 at the Mandrake spash screen.
It'll take you to a place where you choose which kernel to boot.
Then type:
linux nousb
It should stop the delays
