Hi,
I am looking for comments from anyone who has downloaded and installed RH9. I want to download it but I'll wait until I hear some feedback on the web about it. Has anyone had the chance to check it out yet?
Cheers.

Here's a link to a solid review on www.slashdot.org;

quote '"Dax Kelson from Guru Labs has posted a technical review for Red Hat Linux 9. It's a definite read if you want to get away from the marketing fluff that focuses on eye-candy and instead read about the release from a sysadmin's point-of-view."
Have fun ;)

It's great! A definate improvement over 8.0, with all updated packages, and new versions of everything! It comes with great hardware support, and even auto-detected my onboard sound on my new asus Nforce 2 mobo! KDE 3.1 feels faster, and bluecure is practically the same it was in 8.0! It's worth getting IMHO if you are considering a Redhat system. Even if you have 8.0 it's worth getting! I suggest you download it via BitTorrent, a p2p program which MANY have used to download Redhat 9.0!

Just used RH9 to update my laptop from the beta, works good too. Might even be a tad bit faster from what I can tell (it's an ancient Gateway 2000 w/ a P150 and upped the mem to 162)
Seems more stable then the beta even, at least I haven't lost the mouse on this flakey hardware yet :)) it still didn't detect the sound card but I have that figured out b now...
And the wireless network panel-applet is great! :)
Oh...and apt-get has been updated for it at ftp.freshrpms.net/pub

I've been running RH8 for only a short time so I am glad to hear what you guys have to say about RH9. So far I am encouraged by what I've read. I'm looking for stability more than flash.
Anybody else have more experiences to share about upgrading or a new install of RH9?
By the way, since I'm running RH8, I am wondering if I should upgrade or just do a fresh install. I haven't used the RH8 system all that long so I wouldn't lose a lot if I did a fresh install. Just burn a couple of CD's of the stuff I want to save.
I'm glad to hear that FreshRPMS has RH9 apps already.
Cheers.

I'm considering just doing the upgrade from RH8 to RH9. I'll be backing up crucial data and probably even creating an image for my Linux drive, however.
I'm downloading now Redhat9, I don't know if I should try to update or install it.

Ximian is charging for the exchange connector, thru redcarpet.
RH 9 is very powerful with the new multithreaded kernel. This is especially evident when listing to music or mplayer while surfing. Almost no dropout.
I have found a few olders apps like compupic that was distributed with redhat 7.3 that are not compatible.

"the new multithreaded kernel"?
WTF? The Linux kernel has been multithreaded for as long as I can remember...

I have a problem with RH9 playing back video files via Mplayer or Xine. RH seems to launch 2 instances of Mplayer or Xine (doesn't matter where I launch from terminal/gui) and plays them back one after another.Very strange in that it affects both programs so it's got to be somthing with KDE I suspect. :(
Also why isn't /sbin included by default within the root account ? I thought I had a borked installation when trying to run iptables or modprobe (as root) and getting a command not found error :)
Other than that it seems to be a decent desktop. I just installed it to see what RH 9 has to offer and for a desktop system it seems rather good.

I started the install process this morning, I had been running 8 solid now for about 9 months but I saw all the reviews and decided to give it a try. Everything went really smooth during installation which I hate messing with this machine because of all the crap in it, Poweredge 6450, 4 Xeon 550's, 2.5gb's memory, 4 36gb SCSI ultra 160's, but the install went perfect. The only thing I dont like so far is the Samba GUI setup, I found it easier to just edit the smb.conf file myself. As of right now I have Samba, Sendmail, and Apache running with no prblems. I dont care much about the graphical part being that this is a server but it does look nice and it runs maybe a tiny bit faster that 8.0.

IMHO this is the best redhat so far. The install went smoothly and the sound video and ntfs mounting problems were soved within minutes. Seems to be slightly faster than rh8 but i could be wrong. BTW this is primarily a desktop machine.
