Well, I pondered whether or not I should even post this here as I don't have any official "status" here anymore like I used to. Plus a lot of the people here don't know who I am anymore anyway. But, there are enough of you guys around who do know me to justify the post, so here goes.
Actually, my resigning as moderator here (and my diminished posting prior to that) is part of a bigger picture which is what I'm getting at here. So, rather than beat around the bush, here's the scoop: no more Linux for this cat.
Yeah, it's weird, but it makes sense. I have to use Windows at work all the time and I keep getting more and more hardware that simply isn't supported by Linux (wlan card, webcam, vid card, etc.) - and yes I know where to look :) Some have marginal support, but I just don't want to take the time to deal with it anymore. So I've converted my main box to WinXP Home (I'll buy the Pro upgrade soon), my laptop to XP Home, and my webserver box to Win2k Pro. The funny thing is, now I need to find a site that's sort of like "windowsnewbie" because I don't know my way around Win2k for server stuffs. I'm thinking www.mcsetutor.com looks good and I know a few folks there. For nostalgic purposes I may install cygwin, but I don't see it happening.
To the coder people out there, I may still code Python or I may not. I've actually reinvested time into Perl lately and may shift to that for a while. Perl 6 looks really sweet and it may cause me to finally switch. But, ActiveState has stuff for both of those languages in Windows so I'll be right at home.
So, you may not see me here much anymore because I'll probably be rebooting ;) I mean, playing with Windows and setting it up to my taste. Wish me luck, everyone. Thanks for everything.

To quote our former Pres, "I feel your pain".
I've been winfree for three months now and have hit the wall with several hardware problems as well. The
WLAN problem I couldn't resolve was with a Linksys WUSB11 but I dumped the wireles DSL and simply went to a straight ADSL connection for a bit more money.
The real problem I have is with Canon Digi-camera and also a Canon scanner. Not a fault of Linux but Canon. They are fairly recent and pricey purchases so I am not going to dump them. Instead I'll have to do a workaround (2nd HD thats Win dedicated).
Sorry to see you leave here but if you are using your box as I am for serious work type applications (I am a forex trader and analyst) so Linux isn't a play thing. There is much I really enjoy and appreciate about all the various distros I have tried but sometimes the work arounds are too troublesome to deal with when I use the same box for my work.

I open up my heart and bare my soul and you all think it's a joke.
Well, good for you. Because it was :) I was hoping to snag more of you than that :) I actually know of a few more people that I either "sorta" convinced or fully convinced, but that didn't respond here. That makes me happy because I did put a bit of time into that post into making it decently subtle so as to be sorta believable.
Anyway, I hope this little joke was funnier than, well ... every single Slashdot joke yesterday *groan* :)

I did read it a few times, but one detail just wasn't subtle enough for my BS meter.

I just don't see you needing a Microsoft web server environment for a job (Mr. I do embedded C for NASA as my summer gig). I did laugh pretty freaking hard thinking of you writing .asp code though. Now if you would have said something, I guess it's time to look into setting up a samba domain controller, you may have gotten me.
Sorry about messing up your joke. I haven't been the most pleasant person to be around cause I'm dealing with a pretty nasty bug in some software I'm using (it's causing legit emails to be bounced under a specific condition). I think I have a solution (basically a reimplementation of part of his app) but I got to get in touch with Jake (the developer, he's from H-town too, both of our servers are co-located at HAL-PC) and get some feedback from him. He is such a night owl, but I'll catch up with him tonight sometime.
Anyways how's h-town treating you Strike? Are you finished with school? With the present economy it would almost be better to be in school that in the job market (though development is picking up here, services and infrastructure is in the can).

ashibaka - heh, it was an April Fool's joke. Actually, I have been struggling a bit getting my WLAN PCMCIA card working (again, I had it working before but have reinstalled since), but it's more for lack of dedication to getting it working than to lack of information. Thanks for the link though ;)
stiles - H-town is treating me okay, I finished with school last May and am working for an HR company in town on the southwest side while living with my parents. I'm actively looking for any other job, preferably something engineering or IT related as what I am doing here is neither (don't ask, I'd rather not go into it, but it's admin-related (and I don't mean sysadmin)). I've been pursuing a few job leads in TX, notably two in the San Antonio area (where my girlfriend will likely be after her graduation in May), both of the listings were courtesy of LNO members - Stuka and GnuVince :) So, we'll see how that turns out.
Hey, do you ever go to HLUG meetings? I've been somewhat interested since it's sort of in my quadrant of town (ie, SW Houston), but I haven't had the initiative to go to any of them yet. It'd be cool if I knew someone there first :)

Knowing your feelings for Linux and Debian in particular I couldn't fall for this, but nice try, there were some very poor efforts this year :)

I haven't gone is sooooo long, but I really need to go up there more often. The linux workshops are every Wednesday @ 6PM, but that time is pretty flexable, I think the workshops is just ppl getting together n helping each other out. I don't know when the Linux SIG meetings are anymore, used to be the third Sat @ 2PM. I need to get a HAL-PC membership again but that's not a big deal. Let me know if you want to meet up there.

I admit it: you had me. I was mentally thinking, "Strike, NO!" as I was reading down until I saw stiles post. I even caught the same Win2K server thing he did and still fell hard. I guess I was just gullible today.

This joke was cruel and unusual punishment! You are a very devious man. It's not like we didn't all get enough of this from newsforge and the likes. Thank heaven this day only comes once a year. ;)
Other jokes that ended up giving me nightmares:
-gentoo adopting rpm's
-Lindows and Microsoft working together to create a new software license
P.S.
I guess the real joke is on microsoft. Now THAT is something to laugh about. :p
