Nvidia doesn't support Linux very well, but that shouldn't stop you from being able to get into text mode.

I really have no recommendation, other than trying to install it differently. Your installation cd's may be scratched or defective.

If you want my personal opinion and you've been using linux a while:
Don't move from redhat to mandrake, move from redhat to debian.

I wish you the best of luck.

PS
Next time, help support Linux by purchasing an ATI graphics card.

I had a similar problem with 9.1 and a GeForce DDR card. It seems to be related with the nv driver included with 9.1...

To get around the problem, I had to install the OS with the VESA driver. After booting the system, I installed the NVidia drivers (available in rpm for 9.1 at Use Linux At Home Video Article (http://www.uselinuxathome.com/ENvideo.htm) ).

I had no problem after that.

Hope this helps...

umm - what makes you think the nvidia doesn't support linux very well? in fact, it is the has best-supported 3D drivers for linux. actually - the new drivers that they (nvidia) just released for linux come with an automatic updater and installer.

the reason this person't GeForce 4 card doesn't work "out of the box" with his distro is that XFree86 doesn't support the GeForce 4 card under the version of XFree his distro comes with. the XFree "nv" driver only supports up to a GeForce 3 however, the driver that comes with XFree doesn't do 3D properly anways. nvidia driver's are not supplied with linux distros due to their (nvidia's) licensing. the nvidia drivers that come with XFree are not written by nvidia.

If he installs the nvidia drivers, which are available on the nvidia web site, then his card will work just fine.

Mandrake offers recompiled nVidia drivers to their paid members. If you really like Mandrake, support them, and download their working version of nVidia's drivers. I recently reinstalled my MDK 9.1 to try out nVidia's new automated driver v4349 that downloads, compiles, and install for you. Apparently it didn't work, screen flashes multiple times and gets the command prompt just like v4191. But when I installed Mandrake's recompiled nVidia drivers it worked!

i figured out the original problem. i was setting the screen resolution to 1024x768. i reinstalled and set it to 800x600. that solved the problem. as far as the nvidia drivers i had no problem installing the new release. UT2003 runs smooth as silk.
