I've been using Linux for about 4 months now, since I switched cold turkey, and was just remembering how life used to be before Linux.

I miss my OS crashing daily.
I miss having to reboot twice daily.
I miss an OS that can't handle real world use.
I miss an OS that needs half gig of ram to boot.
I miss the horrible memory management in Windose.
I miss the BSOD. It had such a pretty blue color to it.
I miss corrupted files.
I miss corrupted boot sectors.
I miss having applications that restricted you to having everything in one window.
I miss having to go up to the tool bar menu to do anything within a program.
I miss cussing out Bill Gates and Microsoft. Where do I release my pent up anger...err wait a minute, all the anger was because of windoz.
I miss having updates forced upon me.
I miss the horrible tech support with windoes.
I miss my computer being frozen every day.
I miss viruses and trojans.
I miss having to defrag my disks.
I miss not being able to customize applications.
I miss the incompatability between programs.
I miss Internet Explorer and how horrible it was.
I miss the total lack of security I had under windoz.
I miss the horrible mail clients like Outlook.
-----------------------------------------
I miss windows file manager.
I miss the nice fonts windows had.
I miss some of the neat applications like interactive world atlases and encyclopedias.
I miss the financial applications, expecially tax preperation programs.
I miss some of the cute utilites that you could find for windoz.

Anyone have any suggestions for the items listed below the dashed line?

p.s. Does anyone know why I can't simply cut & paste from OpenOfficeWriter directly into Mozilla mail compose? I have to copy from OOW, paste it into the Gnome Notepad, do a copy from Notepad and paste into Mozilla compose mail window.

Above the dashes, there are much more. Two annoying things are: in 2k, you insert a CD and immediately click the drive drop-down menu or open File Manager, and it freezes for a few seconds; in xp, you move menu items around and immediately click File > Program, it freezes up a second.

Below the dashes, most people babysit Windows installs: you're asked for name, company name, yadda yadda yadda, in the middle and at the end of install.

"I miss the nice fonts windows had." - to my best knowledge, Yoper and Vector Linux have the same MS fonts installed by default.

You could stop using CTRL-C and start using highlighting. Paste with middle mouse button.

I.

copy them over to linux then. its an easy process and will work with any distro as long as you have the ability to display truetype fonts. that is the first thing i do after i get X up and running after a fresh install.

There is a project to clone the Microsoft GUI on Linux. I think they have already done the file manager. Sorry I can't remember what it is called. Googling for 'linux windows desktop clone' doesn't help much :-(

XPDE is the desktop manager that tries to imitate windoze. you can find it at www.xpde.com I also believe that these people are cloning some of the programs in it like the filemananger, calculator and other small stuff like that.

jetblackz, Thanks for the 'highlight/paste' tip. I use it all the time, just never thought to use is in this situation. It's still frustrating when something like CRTL-C/CRTL-V doesn't work, but that may just be a windoz thing.

Hayl, It's not easy copying things from windows when you don't have windows anymore. When I said I got rid of all Microsoft products, I meant it! I hate MS.

I have got a lot of neat fonts NOW, but it took awhile to find and install them.

eyceguy, don't get me wrong, I was just commenting on the fact that the windows file manager will handle an enormous amount of files, that Linux file managers don't seem to be able to handle, except for Endeavour2.

I bought a brand new e-machine for the office. It came loaded with XP. It has either crashed or froze on me over 25 times in the last 2 weeks. Today alone, I spent most of the day 'fighting' with MS Word and MS Access. Strange things were happening, to where I had to reboot quite often, making my appreciate Linux that much more. I receive a lot of word docs that have imbedded macros and vba code and graphics in them that OO or StarOffcie can't handle very well. I've tried desparetly to convert these people over to Linux, or other products, but they are too set in their ways.

Wow is that ugly or what?

Yes, it's so sad, isn't it?

It REALLY is sad!

I've got a 120GB removable hd that I'm watching a movie from, while I'm backing up my system to the same drive, converting a video to Div-x on the same drive, downloading files on the same drive and the video hasn't even burped once!

This isn't a 3 Ghz computer. It's a 800 Mhz model!

I could only dream of doing this with windoze. Even the latest windoz can't even dial a modem without disrupting a song playing.

People just don't get it. Why would ANYONE put up with windows, when they could have Linux?

About 10 years ago, I was running SCO Unix on a 25Mhz computer. I had 32 terminals hooked up with 31 modems, running a bulletin board. I used the 32nd terminal to write and compile programs on. The BBS ran a very intensive database on it.

I rebooted that system once to update the kernal in three years. ONCE!

It's amazing how brainwashed most of the people are and what a great marketing job Microsoft has done to pull the wool over people's eyes.

When I switched to Linux about 4 months ago, I loaded RH7.3 onto the same drive as Win98. Within 2 days, Windose had corrupted the boot sector. At that point, I wiped the disk and reformated it for ext2, and ext3 and loaded RH7.3 and threw away ALL my windows disks and programs.

I'll tell you, after fighting with windoze most of my corporate life, it's like a breath of fresh air to not have to put up with that crap.

You're welcome, jjordan.

My story is quite different. My friend is a half Linux convert: still runs Windows. He buys and runs Linux distros. He's an average Joe: been using Mandrake. He's also a Linux advocate. I didn't ask him to do any of these. I just "showed him the door".

Another friend may be upgrading her computer. If that happens, I'd most definitely install a dual system and configure the Linux to look and feel as closely to Windows as possible so she wouldn't notice it's Linux.

I still use Windows, but I'll play along ;)

I miss having to reboot for every little update.
I miss having some programs (including the Windows Update Utility!) rebooting my box without my permission.
I miss having to jump through hoops uphill both ways while sacrificing a goat to get even new Windows programs to take advantage of NT's multi-user environment.
I miss my software RAID array's bandwidth being sucked up by swapping even though I have 400MB free RAM.
I miss having to navigate through several layers of windows due to explorer's lack of virtual desktops.
I miss having to rigorously inspect programs before and after installation to ensure that no spyware got in.
I miss having to spend thousands of dollars to make the command line useful.
I miss services and applications failing with no and/or useless error messages.

---------

I miss the ease of setting up Windows due to it having one standard for font rendering, printing, widgets, etc.
I miss the snappy GUI response, and the interface that was (mostly) functional without getting in my way.
I miss the games.
Err....

You could also use highlight Ctrl+Insert and then Shift+insert

I use it for everything.....

YOu miss Windoze file manager? That section of the oversized explorer.exe?! Geez, that program is why I switched! Konqueror is soooo much more stable.

I disagree, Konquerer crashes a lot. Its given me more seg faults than any other program. Rox, at a tenth of the memory consumption, on the other hand...

Follow my sig, fixing the miltiple core dumps in Konqueror is easy, once you know what the problem is.

Well, neither Konquerer nor Rox could handle what I wanted to do. I have another thread going on this, but I regularly handle directories with anywhere from 10,000 to 20,000 files in them. Endeavour2 was the ONLY file manager that I found that could handle this simple task. Windoze file manager could also handle this simple task, which is why I said that I miss windose file manager. Endeavour2 still has some issues.

In fact I had to write my own 'cp' command just to handle copying these large directories because the 'cp' command in Linux couldn't. This fact shocked me.

Thanks nextbillgates for your additions that I missed. Ah.... I'm a little concerned about your handle there.
I know BillG is fearing LInux and Open Source so much that he decided to release his source code, even though it poses a 'national security risk'. But, hey, is that REALLY you Bill?

Thanks, I actually saw that in an earlier post and bookmarked it - though I still prefer lightweight things for this computer such as Rox and blackbox - konquerer can come in handy occasionally.

Hmmm, I've never had a seg fault in Konqueror.
