First of all, take it easy on the caps. On the SuSE 8.0 installation there should be a package for Intel HAM modems under commercial packages.
Otherwise external serial is always the way to go w/ Linux.

I also used to have all sorts of troubles setting up modems but I since then I have learned a few things that might help.
1. Make sure your modem is supported by linux. My understanding is that most external modems should work. Many internal modems cause problems as they are not fully supported.
2. Check your bios to make sure your com ports are enabled.
3. Try manually configuring your modem. I had all sorts of problems when I was using RH, as it just would not detect my modem. In the end I entered the serial port name in the section where it asks for the modem device name.
/dev/ttyS0 is equivalent to com port 1
/dev/ttyS1 is equivalent to com port 2
If you want to really get clever make a soft link to your serial port called /dev/modem. That way you can use /dev/modem for your device name.
Hope this helps,
Ben

the intel modem should work fine. you say you put the drivers on a floppy? take a look at /mnt/floppy. if they are there, copy them wherever you choose, and then un tar them. look at the install or readme file (i cant remember which) and just follow the directions. done this twice, once with that exact modem, and again with a similar intel chipset. both work perfectly.
