I've been using MS windows for a long time. I am tired of MS win. So I've been trying SuSe linux 7.0. My problems are these. I have a win modem. I have a parallel scanner. I have a new cd burner. All of these things work in windows but windows is very unstable and crashes a lot. In order to get these working I either need to figure out what I am doing or buy new hardware. I can't seem to find exactly the help I need. I've done searches and I'm still lost. I've been told I can buy newer versions of linux, or download them free from the internet. My income is on the poor side. I can't afford to buy a modem, cd burner, scanner and a new version of linux. I did the math and it would unforunatley be cheaper just to by XP, I hate XP. As far as downloading it from the internet. I have a 56k dial up modem. One folder I tried to download would have taken three or four days. The complete downloads start at 700m and up. I am very frustrated at all of this. I hear all this talk about Linux and free but nothing is free. Never will be. Just venting. But I might be stuck with windows, so I think I'm allowed.
This is my last call for help. Then I'm done.

Could you go into a little more detail about your specific problems please? I'm no expert, but I'm sure it will help a bit in solving them. Also, when it comes to getting another Linux distro, I'll download the isos for whatever one you want and burn them and then mail them to you for free if you'd like. :D I know what it's like to be a little low on the cash.

The most important problem I have is my modem. It's an lt winmodem and until recently I thought it was a real modem. I have no idea how to install drivers in linux. I have the right programs, maybe, but I don't know enough about linux to install it the right way. I looked for a rpm package for my modem but couldn't find one. So it has to been done from scratch. I do some work on websites for a relatives business and a personal website for myself. I don't charge my relative anything, I just enjoy doing it, it's fun. Being connected to the internet is very important. But with windows...., well If you have experinced windows you know what I'll say next. Linux is great but I can't get the modem working.

And thank you. If I could get an update for suse that would be great.

My e-mail is:wolfspider70@hotmail.com and I can give you my address. I'll reimburse you for the postage also.

Posting the exact make/model of your modem would give us something to go on.

About the big download, you could try using a download manager from Win and do the download on and off till you have at least the first CD of the distro you chose. There a several freeware download managers you can try and if the FTP or HTTP site you download from supports resumes, you're on your way!

(Sorry for the link to the win software but it's for a good cause :p For free download managers on windows, try the following : http://www.webattack.com/freeware/downloader/fwdown.shtml )

If I'm reading the chips correctly: Large chip is Lucent 1646Too, medium chip is lucent 1027 JH, small chip is Lucent 1034 AH-J. The name on the modem itself is 1998 Digitan systems D5560-552 Rev. B

I also have another problem. It's attached and is self-explanatory.

I like Linux. I am frustrated but I'm not going to give up and I'm not going to surrender to Microsoft. I appreciate the help.

Can you post the url of where you downloaded that wine binary from?

lonewolf,

There is a driver for Lucent modems with the 1646/1646Too chipset, but it looks like you'll need to compile it from source due to the version of kernel in SuSE 7.0 (version 2.2.16, I believe). There are pre-compiled, ready-to-run drivers for other kernel versions, but I couldn't find one for 2.2.16.

For more information, check out this site:
http://www.heby.de/ltmodem

and some of the other links from this Google search (http://www.google.com/linux?hl=en&lr=lang_en&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=lucent+mars+driver)

Wine:
I did a search on google for wine that was compatible for suse 7.0. I'm not sure where I downloaded it but it was off of a suse sight. Suse has discontinued support and downloads for 7.0. I'll retrace my steps and re-do the search and let you know.

Modem:
I can try to upgrade my kernel to someting other then 2.2.16. Do you know what kernel would work the best or should I just upgrade to the latest. Then I can work on getting the driver for the modem working.

Thanks.

Pre-compiled binaries for SuSE (certain 2.4.x kernel versions only) can be found here (http://www.sfu.ca/~cth/ltmodem/dists/suse). If you upgrade the kernel, make sure you upgrade to one of versions under which the binaries were compiled, otherwise you'll have to compile fom source.
