If you're really a true newbie, you're a pretty brave one to start out with gentoo. All the more power to you.

The way to get into a console again is to use you're install disk to boot up. If you downloaded gentoo, you should have boot floppy or livecd that can get you into a console. Once you're in a console, you can mount the drive you're installing to, and edit fstab. The gentoo instructions will help you through that process, or you can ask me about it if you get lost.

Good luck on the install. Gentoo is pretty tricky to install, but worth the effort.
