guys i havent tried vmware on linux yet, but i have on windows and it is just amazing how they can make a program like that. anyways, i wanted to say that you guys should try out something that will run 99% of windows programs ,unlike wine which has trouble with wordpad.exe, get the beta test free while you can :P

I use VMWare all the time at work for app testing. The problem is that it's way too slow and its RAM requirements are huge. Not everyone can run a dual CPU system with > 1GB of RAM, which is what's needed.
I use Crossover Office to run Outlook on Redhat 8 at work. It runs fast and since it's not in a VMWare window it functions as a native app. VMWare is only really good for an app or two that you don't use very often or for testing software without rebooting.

"the directory of C header files that match your running" what? Kernel? XFree86? Something else entirely?

not really a fair comparison imho. at the risk of sounding cliche - that is like comparing apples and oranges. vmware and wine are not even close to being the same type of app.

*checks his pockets*
Nope, no $300 extra to spare for a VMWare license. I sure wish they had something cheaper. $100 I might be able to swing. Even that I'd have trouble justifying. I'm at the point now where I'm just about 100% native. I occassionally reboot for some Windows only tasks, but it's very rare now.

I haven't used WINE yet, but I hear people complain about it all the time. It can't run wordpad? Gimme a break!
I just think the people using WINE are trying to use it's limited built in functions instead of taking full advantage of all the dll's M$ supplied them with. You paid for them, freakin use them!

Hmm...let's see...
"wine /windows/'Program Files'/Accessories/wordpad.exe"
Hey, look...it's wordpad! Seems to work good too
I'm sure VMware would be really nice, but as mentioned at $300 it's a bit steep...when a full WindowsXP Professional license will cost the same...

A couple of weeks ago, I tried to (re- -- it had been working before, under '98) install Sunbelt Software's RAdmin program on my machine, with Wine. I had a version of XP on there at the time (hey, school paid for it, it was running behind a draconian firewall, I won't complain). Surprise, surprise, it doesn't work. Why not, you ask?
Simple. Wine's ntdll (Windows kernel) does not contain the, oh, fifteen to twenty completely undocumented (as in named "func4925" or similar) functions that the various security DLL's that XP was using. RAdmin no worky.
So, I reinstall '98SE. Bliss... (that is, after I reboot TWELVE TIMES just getting the OS going... gotta love '98  )
I'd be careful using "it's limited built in functions" (that do work, BTW, mostly) rather than "taking full advantage of all the dll's" Microsoft has seen fit to give me.

I'm almost 100% sure swap spaces can't contain bootloaders.

I use WINE for the few Windows programs I need. All 3 programs work fine in it (Winzip, ClrMAMEPro and Forbidden Forest III for anyone curious).
If I was to use VMWare, not only would I have to pay for VMWare itself, but I would also have to pay for a copy of Windows to run in it. I'm sure this is probably the case for many Linux users.

ClrMAMEPro Is that just MAME, as in the Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator? There are native versions of that too...

I use the zip and unzip commands for .zip files, which is great, but a site where I get games for MAME uses multi-part .zip files (.zip, .z01, .z02, .z03 etc.) for the large hard disk images, which are not supported by the command line unzip program.
ClrMAME Pro is a program that I use to check my MAME ROMs and find out which (if any) are missing, corrupt, out of date etc. Basically, it's a MAME ROM manager. For actually playing the ROMs in MAME I use the native program XMAME.

Ahh. From my version of the unzip manpage, comes this:
Multi-part archives are not yet supported, except in conjunction with zip. (All parts must be concatenated together in order, and then ``zip -F'' must be performed on the concatenated archive in order to ``fix'' it.) This will definitely be corrected in the next major release. So it looks like you can do it, you've just got to dink around with the files a bit.
