choppy x

i've noticed from time to time that my X gets choppy...very choppy, but the system remains fine. i just restart x and it works better usually, but sometimes from the initial launch x runs like crap. I am posting my XFS86Config in case anyone wants to take a look.

For games like Unreal tourney 2003, the system is fine...it's just general usage in the X that blows. If i move a terminal window it is ver y choppy, stuff like that.

My system:
Red Hat 8, kernel 2.4.20
GForce 3 (AGP)
1 gig PC-2700 DDR RAM
NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-4191
NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4191
(both compiled from source rpms)

The same thing happened to me. I was running Mandrake 9.0. During install it gave me the option between two different versions of X. I chose the 4.x version. It showed up all choppy. Later I reinstalled and chose the 3.x version of X and it ran fine. So maybe you have an unstable version of X.

that could be true...but why would RH ship an unstable version of X? which i have is 4.2
