I recently got a chance to try VMWare recently (my friend got it) and I must say I was fairly impressed! It was the windows version, 3.2.0, and Mandrake installed and ran fine with some small inconsistencies (icons didn't show up on the K menu, some animation slow downs), but netherless impressive.

I was curious if anyone here has tried the full version of VMWare for linux? Does it run programs fairly good? I am considering purchasing VMWare for linux so I can quit dual booting all the time (not to mention restarting everytime I install something) and continue to use the programs I need.

I have heard it doesnt play games very well, but that is not a major factor in needing it.

can't say i've tried VmWare, but i did install win4lin last night.

From what i've heard, VMware is quite resource hungry but very, very good.

Win4lin is much cheaper and you can only install win 95/98/me on it. I installed win98se last night and it runs like a native install :)

I'm using it for photoshop & dreamweaver and internet banking (it needs internet explorer!!)

Hope this helps :)

edit: i also discovered that VMware 'shields' it's windows install......so you can't get at any files you make (win4lin doesn't suffer from this)

the linux version works fine.

the only issue i have/had with it is that it starts up some daemons that have to run all the time even when you aren't using it.

If you purchase VMware 3.2 now, you can get a free upgrade to 4.0 when it is released (should be quite soon).

Nice. I've moved back to windows recently and I've been dual booting, which is quite a pain. The whole concept of a virtual machine has indeed fascinated me, and a demo I obtained that was for windows worked wonders, I was able to install Debian on it with no problem!

I'd like to get this for Linux because a) I dont want to reboot 25 ti es a day, and b) I need to have a constant connection to the internet so my server can always be up. The good thing about having vmware is I could have a server running, install or update something for winXP and reboot without rebooting my actual PC. :D

That and I need to stay up to date with VB, VB .NET, and Access. :(
