Hello,

I have a problem getting Red Hat Linux 8.0 installed on my hd.
(P4 2,26 w/ asus s533 mainboard,crucial 512 ddr,gf 2mx, sb live)

I have Windows XP installed, with 8 gb free hd place.
(outside the windows partitions)

Chosing auto partitioning RH makes 3 partitions, a swap on 1 gb, boot 102 mb, and about 5 gb on root.

I chose Gnome and a couple of admin, server and editor packages. (I would like to try out php & apache when I'm getting more familiar with linux)

All 3 cd's are getting copied to the hd. But when the last cd is finished I get a fatal failure, and a message that it's safe to reboot.

My problem is that I would like to install boot loader (Grub?) on first sector of the boot partition. (not MBR)

So as the install quits before I get to make a boot disk, I don't get to boot my installation again and further see what the problem even was.

The reason I do not use MBR, is because I would like to boot into linux with a boot disk, make a bootsect.lnx file to place on my windows partition. To be able to chose to boot Linux from the windows OS menu.

Q: Are there any way to make a boot disk that would start up my RH install?

regards, Xanoo

Have you created the /boot partition on a primary or logical partition?

You could try booting from the installation cd in rescue mode to see if you can boot the installed (or close to) system and then create the bootdisk.

Tried to boot in rescue mode but that didn't quit work.

I also tried to install again with minimal mode selected with no luck. Same when I tried to force LBA32.

I have the 3 Linux partitions placed as the 8 last gb. boot as dev/hda7 and root as hda8. That makes it a logical partition I guess.

The first 110 gb is windows ntfs partitions. (c,d,e)

My hardware:

P4 2,26 mhz
Asus S533 mainboard (Lan and sound integrated)
Crucual 2x 256 mb
Geforce 2mx
SB Live!
MS Intellimouse explorer 3.0 usb
ps2 keyboard
samsung synchmaster 1100p plus (21")
Seagate Barracuda V 120 gb (8 mb cache)

Forgot to include the error msg I get a couple of:

(Anaconda:86:) gnomecanvas-critical **: file gnome-canvas-path-def.c: line 1142 (gnome_canvas_path_def_any_closed): assertion 'Path !=NULL' failed

this is spammed a few times right after I used all 3 cd's and copied all data to the harddrive. It then tells me it's an abnormal termination and it's safe to reboot

I have no idea what that error message means. Can you deselect the gnomecanvas package during the installation so it does not attempt to install?

Could there be a problem with the 3rd cd?

You don't really need a separate /boot partition since a separate /boot is meant to be a primary partition and set to be active.

Try searching Redhat's website and Google for Linux for 'gnomecanvas-critical'.
