I have the retail box of Mandrake 8, but I can get it to install on my newly configured system.
When trying to run the setup it stops after this message -

Uniform multi platform E-IDE driver revision : 6.31
ide: assuming 33mhz system bus speed for PI0 Modes; override with idebus=xx
PCI-IDE: unkown IDE controller on PCI bus 00 device 48, VID=10de, DID=0065
PCI_IDE chipset revision 162
PCI_: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
ide0: BM-DMA at 0xf000-0xf007, BIOS settings: hdb: DMA
ide1: BM-DMA at 0xf008-0xf00f, BIOS settings: hdd: DMA

Here is hardware setup -
AthlonXP 2100+
ASUS A7N8X Deluxe MOBO
512mb PC3200 DDRRam
40gb Maxtor HD (master) WinXp installed
20gb IBM HD (slave)
ATI Radeon 9700 pro

I'm thinking since Mandrake 8 was before the A7N8X, it just may not like the nforce2 chipset or something. Anybody have some insight?

At the point where your system is hanging, it has detected the IDE controller channels and is then trying to probe the drives on those channels. It might be the chipset, but there are other possiblities:

- Make sure all of your devices are properly cabled, and that the IDE cables' connectors are firmly seated on both ends.

- Make sure each drive's Master/Slave jumpers are set correctly. If your drives are using the "Cable Select" jumper setting, try changing them to their appropriate Master/Slave settings instead.

- Try throttling back or disabling the DMA setting(s) in your BIOS if that's an option.

- Turn off Plug-N-Play support and power management in your BIOS.

- Disconnect any unnecessary IDE devices before installing.

- Try the installation with a few of the different boot options:

nodma
noathlon
nopentium
etc., etc.

See Mandrake's support site for instructions on using the options.

- Search Google to see if others have experienced problems with Mandrake 8 and your particular hardware.

Thanks, but nothing helped. I'm just going to try downloading the latest version and see if that will work.

The newest verion might definitely help of it's a hardware compatibilty issue. Good luck.
