Hello,

I have a laptop computer which can dual boot either Win98 or RedHat Linux 8.0. I recently got a D-Link DI-614+ Wireless Broadband Router and a D-Link DWL-650+ PCMCIA card for my laptop. The wireless networking setup works fine under Win98, but I'm having trouble getting things set up under Linux. Perhaps someone out there can help.

First, here are the messages I see when I restart my PCMCIA services and insert the card under linux:

Mar 14 08:38:45 buzz /etc/hotplug/pci.agent: ... no modules for PCI slot 06:00.0
Mar 14 08:43:40 buzz cardmgr[1542]: exiting

Mar 14 08:43:45 buzz /etc/hotplug/pci.agent: ... no modules for PCI slot 06:00.0

When I insert the card, I don't get the "two high beeps" or even the "high beep and low beep". I get a very soft click. So I thought perhaps I should add some information to /etc/pcmcia/config. First I probed the card with cardctl:

Socket 0:
no product info available
Socket 1:
product info: "Wireless Network CardBus PC Card", "Global", "", ""
manfid: 0x0097, 0x8402

Then I added the following three lines to /etc/pcmcia/config:

card "Wireless Network CardBus PC Card"
manfid 0x0097, 0x8402
bind "orinoco_cs"

Then I restarted the pcmcia services, but nothing changed. I saw on a web page that the DWL-650+ is not prismII-based. Am I lacking the correct driver for this card? Is there a driver available? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Bob Buchanan

Have you compiled support into the kernel? One of the error messages says that there's no module for the PCI slot.

There have been many posts on this subject with that particular card in this forum . It would help to do a search for your problem before posting this again and again and oh you get the idea. Basically there is no support yet :( . It is a texas instruments chipset, different from the prism 2 used in earlier cards by dlink. Do a search on this form and you will find many postings on this subject :)

There is a set of drivers on a German web site. I have 2 thinkpads (one linux one windows) and one Dlink card and one Cisco card. I downloaded the drivers but never compiled them as the Cisco card works and is a much better card to start with. I only paid $49 -$20 rebate for the card so I was not going to stress over it. I have not heard of any one actually had success. I was going to take it on as a challenge, but lost interest. The lesson learned is check to see what works before laying out the cash. There is a good site, search on Google, Seattle Wireless that rates the cards and how to modify the cards to get better range.

I thought I posted this, but I guess not.

Here's a link to where you can get the drivers, but I have not know of anyone to get them to work. I tried once, but failed so bad I exchanged it for a Linksys wpc-11 card which work with a default install and no additional drivers.

Here's the link http://www.zahner2000.de/ You can get the driver from the link to the bottom left

Yup that is the one. I think it is actually for the pci card not card bus, but it in theory should be able to work. I was to lazy to look it up. There are good instructions in the read me files, but that is as far as I got, then lost interest.
