I am relatively new, don't know much abou the internal workings of Linux yet, but I'm learning. I am wondering: Can I use an RPM that is listed on rpmfind.net as for Redat 8.0 on a redhat 7.3-based system. Specifically, I am trying to upgrade hdparm. I don't think, as far as I can tell, that the version I have supports UDMA 100, and I believe the one for 8.0 does. so, actually, this is like two questions in one. Does 7.3's hdparm support UDMA/100, with a promise UltraTX133 controller, and two 400BB WD HDs, and and Seagate 20G 3200014A drive attached, and if it does, how do I enable it, and if not, can I upgrade to thenew hdparm from 8.0?
Thanks

The answer to that is, maybe.
It's all dependant on which specific package you're trying to install - some might be dependant on newer version of libraries or other programs that are in RH8 and not in your version. If that's the case, you'll then find yourself in what is affectionately known as "Dependency Hell" :D
Give it a try, there no better way to find out if it will work or not

If it doesn't work, at the worse you'll have to install something it needs, but that will require something and that will require 3 other packages and those all need 2 each themselves and so on and so on and so on...
Dependancy Hell can lead to hours of installation fun! Next thing you know your 7.3 has been upgraded to an 8.0 :D
