Hello,

I am very new to linux. I just installed a SuSe 8.x
Everything works fine. Today I bought a new DVDRom, installed it. Restarted my system went to my Hardware Info and I can see that the system reconize it. But when I tried to mount it I get this error message::confused:

Could not mount device

The reported error was:

/dev/cdrom: Input/output error

mount: I could not determine the filesystem type and none was specified.

Could some one help me and walk me through on how I can get my DVDrom to work.

Thanks:D

David

What command did you try for mounting the dvd?

Have you added the dvd device to /etc/fstab? Post the contents if you need assistance.

What device is the dvd? hdb, hdc, hdd? primary/slave, secondary/master or slave?

Hello,

ThX for your reply.

Q: What command did you try for mounting the dvd?

A: I just right clicked it in KDE and selected mount. I used the same step for my CD-R and that seem to work.

Q: Have you added the dvd device to /etc/fstab? Post the contents if you need assistance.

A: I don't know how to do this. I tried to look for the information but all I find is installing a CD-R. I not sure to use this. And when I tried using the commands. It does not work. I am using SuSE 8.x if that matters. Again I a very new and want to learn linux.

Q: What device is the dvd? hdb, hdc, hdd? primary/slave, secondary/master or slave?

A: The device is a IDE Toshiba DVD-ROM slave. My CD-R is set as master they are both on the same IDE cable. The hardware info in YaST says the device name is: /dev/hdb

I hope this is enough information for you to help me.

Thanks for taking time with me. I could reinstall the OS again, but then I won't learn how to add a device in the future. Plain to add a HD.

Sorry as some of us need to work or have school during the day and cannot always spend time here at JL.

You didn't need to reinstall as you only likely needed to add the correct device and mountpoint to /etc/fstab.
