i recently bought a new processor (my fan was dead) and i was wondering how i go about changing it. its a p 166 w/mmx. i looked around inside my system and i have a pretty good idea of how to go about changing it but i want to make sure so i dont screw anything up.

Just make sure you use a grounding strap!!
changing cpu's is easy, take your time, I've changed out P4's on 850e and 845 mobo's.
and P3 slot 1's cpu's that's about it.

Take the heat sink/fan off (use a screwdriver to pop off the clip...carefully!)
Pull up on the lever to release the chip
Lift the old CPU out and set the new one on (Zero force is a rule not a guidline...let gravity seat it ;))
Push the lever down
Apply thermal past (just a little, never over do it)
Put the HS/Fan on and use a screwdriver to secure the clip...and don't slip :D
I never use a grounding strip, I've swaped out well over a few dozen CPU's...just make sure you touch something to discharge any static before you touch the electronics (the case is good or something simular, perfurably away from the electronics ;))

Then depending on the retaining bracket thingy (this is what mahdi called "the lever" ;)) that your motherboard has, you might have to take the heatsink and fan off before you start.
Look at the way the current one is in there. If you can lift that retaining arm thing without taking the fan off the current CPU, then do it that way. Then you can just put the new CPU in there without bothering with the fan at all.
But if you can't get the arm to lift without taking the heatsink off (and you probably won't be able to...), then take it off (like mahdi said to do), take the heatsink and fan off the new CPU, switch out the chips, and put the (new) heatsink and fan back on.

As long as the new fan will fit on the old heatsink I wouldn't see why not.
