* Redhat 8.1 beta3 [pheobe]
* Compaq Professional Workstation (http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/techpubs/maintenance_guides/workstation_5100/)
* Single Wide-Ultra disk on a compaq PCI wide-ultra controller
I'm trying to install redhat 8.1 on the above system. Everything is going great until the installer starts to install the packages - then it dies stating saying that there is either a problem with the hard disk or install media.
I know the install media is OK - have tested on another machine so it must be the hard disk.
I have little experience with scsi controllers disks - anyone got any suggestions on how to diagnose whats going on?

Are you installing on a scsi or ide HD?
Some have found ide=nodma to help. Have a look through
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-8.0-Manual/install-guide/ch-bootopts.html
for other install/boot options.

I'm installing on a wide ultra scsi disk - I think there may be a fault on the disk as I got to the point where redhat had recognised the disk and controller, formatted the disk, created /boot, copied the install image and some of the packages but bombed out.

When you installed did you tell it to install the "pentscsi" kernel? That one has support for SCSI controllers/drives.

nope - install text - thats it - but it did install scsi drivers
Since the installer seems to have recognized your SCSI controller this might not be an issue but: have you checked Redhat's Hardware Compatibilty List on their support site to make sure that the controller is certified to work with 8.1beta?
Also, the problem of having a Redhat install bomb during package installation seems to be pretty common around here lately, and it certainly isn't limited to systems with SCSI devices. Some things that have worked for others:
1. Turn off Plug-N-Play OS support in your BIOS
2. Turn off Power Management in your BIOS
3. Try some of the boot options that mdwatts linked to in his post
4. Verify that the rest of your hardware is compatible; even though the error message points to the media, another component might actually be causing a conflict.
