I'm totally a newbie into this Linux thing. I installed Red Hat 8.0 (installation was a beauty!) but I have been unable to install the modem- I tried kppp,too!-
Some friend in the forums told that maybe is because my modem is a winmodem (???). Researching around I've found that "winmodems are not actually complete modems _from the hardware point of view- and they lack certain components to work properly under Linux.
The decription of my modem is here: http://english.aopen.com.tw/products/modem/fm56pm.htm
-Does it work with Linux?
-Has it to be tweaked in any sense-which I (a newbie will not know!)
-Or should I get another modem?

imho external modems are the way to go for Linux, as it's impossible they could be winmodems

It say controllerless but then it has a 16550A compatable UART which would say it isn't.

... Nope it isn't

I think it is a winmodem because most pci modems are and there is a link to a driver on the page. Try the conexant hcf driver (www.mbsi.ca/cnxtlindrv/

download the hcf driver tarball and install it (you will need your kernal headers for this)
tar packagename.tgz
cd ./packagename
./configure
make
make install

and then run hcfpciconfig

then look for your modem under /dev/modem or /dev/ttySHCF0 using kppp or any other dialup software

Read the README that come will it: this is a basic set of instutions

good luck
