Just recently I discovered some amazing bits of software that are included in Debian Woody, and that I didn't even know I had:

* octave - a maths tool like Matlab
* muttprint - prints off e-mails prettily even though you're using a text mail program;)
* antiword - converts Word documents to readable ASCII text and preserves table formatting etc
* nano - free software replacement for the pico editor

I'm sure I sound like a naive idiot, and most of you knew about these anyway - but has anyone else found similarly under-rated free software gems in their distros? You know, the kind of thing that no-one really talks about, and would do the job for you if you just knew it existed...

It never fails to surprise me how much useful software you get when you buy pretty much any distro. But some things you won't hear about unless someone else tips you off!

I'm always discovering new apps especially with SCO Linux 4.0 Server as it includes so many server related applications.

I would advise anyone to have a look through

/bin
/sbin
/usr/bin
/usr/sbin

to familiarize yourself with all the apps included with your distro.

NEVER run any of the apps until you have read the manpage (man <app>) and fully understand it's usage.
