Ever since I got "stuck" with this distro, I must say that I've hated, hated, HATED it!! Every single time I turn around, something comes up that just bugs me. Nothing major, mind you, just annoyances. Like my screensavers not working. Like mp3s not supported. Like no xine, and when I install media players, no mpeg2 or mpeg4 support (spent a good amount of time tonight downloading all kinds of stuff for that, finally got it working right), and just all kinds of things not working right when I compile something. And the rpms give me so much grief, apt-get for RH 8.0 never works, and the package management is crappy too.
Well, any other rants about Red Hat are welcomed. Personally, I plan on migrating to either Gentoo or Debian as soon as I can get that extra HD or DVD burner.
I've got all the things you've complained about working on RH 8.0, with very little trouble. I suggest you read some docco.

Don't get me wrong, i got them working too... My complaint is that, even though small, these were annoyances that I wasn't given grief with under Mandrake or Slack. Whenever I think I got things going smoothly, I always run into something I have to "fix" whilst reading several man pages.

Red Hta locked me out the other night. No logins worked. I wasn't very happy  I am still trying to find out what happened. Every time I logged in, it would just go back to the login screen immediately.

I wanna give Slack a go. A lot of people here keep raving about it being such a Unix like distro etc... Looking forward to it.

Redhat can be hardware specific. Hard to get it working "well" on hardware that is not on the compatible list.

Its not a bad distribution. Red Hats not including dvd player or mp3 player with the os was a smart move in their favor. No copyright infringment. I have evrything set up perfectly on RH 8. I have tried all of the other distros in my signature, and Red Hat 8 managed to prove itself as the most stable distro of all of them. apt-get for RH worked perfectly for me. Zoist, are you logging in text based, or graphical? Explain the scenario in greater detail, I can see if I can help you. I have never had a problem like that in either RH7.3 or 8. Slack isn't all that impressive (IMHO). I used it,it worked, but for what I do, I noticed no difference between it and red hat performance wise, and noticed tha RH 8 had more packages to choose from. The fact that you don't like wasting time configuring things would probably steer you away from slack or debian. As far as screen savers not working, make sure that your video card has 3d acceleration activated. People shouldn't blame distros for problems, any distro can be revamped. You can upgrade the kernel, xfree86, gcc, gnome, kde, and just about anything else incorporated into the OS. I use whatever works reliably, and quickly. I found that in my experiences with them, RH8 tops them.

I wish that Reh Hat worked that well for me, let me rephrase that. I wish that I could find out how to wake it work that well for me. Red Hat is my first attempt at Linux, it has kept me up many hours, I have many books and printed how to articles and I still have problems that I can't solve. I have always been a Windows person and I knew that this would be a different type of computing but it has been more like a nightmare. When I download programs from sites I get all kinds lf errors when installing like "can't do this because you don't have that", "you have the wrong xx-whatever installed", "you must upgrade this to install that". And now the latest is things have stopped working like NFS and Squid. I can't get Samba working. I am willing to put in the research to solve these problems but I find that a lot of the books and articles aren't complete enough for me so I use multiple resources and then find that they don't follow the same ideas. If anyone can help please look at my posting in networking "nfs problems". I will be posting new issues one at a time until I am a happy dancing penguin.
thanks

Well, it's nothing major... it's just that everytime I turn around, there's a small annoyance that needs fixing that I didn't have on other distros (i.e. screensavers not working). My modem isn't detected (was by Mandrake & Slack), but I've been to lazy to find out why as I use Ethernet.
Basically, it's just those annoyances I dont feel like spendng 30 mins fixing.
i been using redhat for quite a while, i used 6.1, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, 8.0 and out of all these releases my favorite is 7.1 it seems the fastest and most stable (to me & my hardware) i have newer releases on CDrom and i don't even use them, occasionally i will pull some application off of one and out it in 7.1

Yeah man i understand it but at the end of the day as far as an "out the box"c distro goes it rocks.
I have a major soft spot for RedHat as it was that disto that got me hooked and i had many hours of fun with it, i now use Gentoo mainly as it is quicker and tailored for my machine.
Anything's better than Windows, i see that M$ are losing a major deal (e-govt in Japan) to Linux... Ha

I agree with you , i have all these problems as you have, not only that, but to me it starts looking as m windows. I thing gentoo it will be the best choise, it is more difficult to install but at least you learn and you do not have dependency problems. To me rpm are very unstable. If you try to instal vlc using rpm that is total nightmare

Follow my sig. It looks terrible, trying to find a better hosting site. The top middle frame, scroll down to select the Redhat tips and tricks. Screensaver working 15 seconds after that.
I really like Redhat, but agree, it is NOT polished. I think they rushed it to market a little too quickly to maximize the market share window. Honestly, how do you miss the screensaver NOT working in KDE. Other major snafus' is the redhat-config-xfree86. Totally usesless unless the origional config works.

I run Red Hat 8.0, and I've had problems with it, especially when I upgraded my packages other programs just stopped working.
The firewall config is the most annoying thing I've ever worked with.
Samba will not work no matter how much I try, keeps giving me a connection refused.
The whole XMMS thing is just ridiculous.
But other than that it's a pretty good distro.
BTW, can anyone tell me how to add a "allow all" ip table through the command line? I'm sick of the firewall config, and I have a decent firewall on my network.

"allow all"?
service iptables stop ; service ipchains stop, followed by service iptables --level 2345 off ; service ipchains --level 2345 off
Actually, that second one may not use RH's "service" command. But what I'm trying to do is stop the services from starting up on the next boot, so do whatever you need for that.
Otherwise, you can do an iptables -F ; iptables -t nat -F ; iptables -t mangle -F ; iptables -P INPUT ACCEPT ; iptables -P FORWARD ACCEPT ; iptables -P OUTPUT ACCEPT, and that should hopefully (1) clear all the rules, then (2) set the policies to accept on all the chains.
