How EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) is different from Internet? or from intranet on local networks?

Thanks

EDI is a data exchange format (protocol, actually: see X12). It has been deprecated by XML and similar structures, although many legacy enterprise systems still haven't moved away from it.

EDI can be exchanged over Inter/Intra/Extranetworking, and is network-layer independent. A lot of organizations are moving away from it completely in favor of an extremely lower overhead XML solution.
