It has been deprecated by XML and similar structures, although many legacy enterprise systems still haven't moved away from it. EDI can be exchanged over Inter/Intra/Extranetworking, and is network-layer independent. A lot of organizations are moving away from it completely in favor of an extremely lower overhead XML solution. FWIW justlinux.com
