Well I must admit for the last past month I have been using windows *sigh*. It started off a dual-boot between M$ Longhorn Alpha and JAMD Linux 0.0.5. Then it turned into JUST M$ Windows 2003 Server RTM. I must admit Windows 2003 Server RTM is the best M$ OS I have ever used, but I miss linux :O(. I just got my modded Xbox a couple day's ago and there are a lot of Windows apps for it. Take for example xiso. I just used that, and Nero to burn an awesome SNES emulator for my xbox. FlashFXP is a great FTP client, and probably the best for FTPing into the Xbox and doing your thing. KazaA Lite is nice, but not nessasary. I don't really feel like dual-booting, and going to windows every single time I want to do something with my xbox. Every day it seems I miss linux more and more. JAMD 0.0.5 just came out, and it is by far the best linux desktop distro ever! I miss XMMS, and mplayer, and Phoenix which runs crappy in windows. Fluxbox was great, and the speed was really nice. Although Windows 2003 Server RTM is also the fastest M$ OS I have used to date, JAMD Linux 0.0.5 is now fully i686 optimized, and after switching the WM to Flux (Maybe Openbox...), and then I fresh 2.4.20 kernel compile I bet JAMD would be blazing! Either way I look at it though I guess windows should stay on my comp for all my xbox stuff. Kbear is the best alternative for FlashFXP, and Xchat is probably the best linux IRC client. xiso isn't that much of a concern as I can just make iso files with cdrecord, but pretty soon I (hopefully) won't need to once I get some RJ45 cable to hook up the xbox to my comp to FTP in. It sounds promising, but is there anyone here who has recomendations for me? Also if any of you have a modded xbox and use it with linux please post!

I checked that out, and even looked into it further. Ultimatly the xbox is a legacy free computer. Maybe I will run linux on it, and that will cure my linux urges :D. But I don't know what it is right now, maybe I am just a destined M$ user. (Thx to this xbox...) . Maybe Ed's debian distro on the xbox will solve my problem. That would be nice...

I've got debian 0.0.10 (xbox ver) running.
You should get a USB keyboard, mouse adapter for it, I made my own.

Put KDE3.1 on it also, not bad comming from a XP user. (Been using windows since 3.0, DOS before that ;) )

The thing you won't like is the limited res the xbox will run linux: 640x480, too low. They ( Eds dev team that ported debian to xbox) need to find a way for higher res on a standard tv.

Maybe I'll put a linux version on one of my PCs. :D

since most of the ms stuff you talk about is not available to the average internet joe, unless they jump through lots of hoops, i don't see your point.

sounds like you've got so much sunshine up your --- you need to wear shades.

to answer your question, whatever distro you try - run blackbox.

Did you try applying the NVTV patch?

I think he means between the USB keyboard and Xbox, since they don't use conventional USB ports.

just asking about Longhorn

i have been reading reviews and stuff but i don't beleve all of it

isn't it supposed to include paladium and everything, or has the alpha version not had all that implimented yet.
it is supposedly not supposed to work without a live net connection.

i only ask because i know how dumb bosses are and i bet they all decide to upgrade to longhorn. so i will need to know how to use it and stuff for my career.

could you write a small (paragraph) review on it to let us all know how it is.

First of all Rufus is the man :O) I was just watching Bum Fights on my xbox w/ my friends a couple of days ago :D (Gotta love that XB media player 2.3!)

Well the first LH leak was decent at being a desktop OS. Then build 4008 was leaked. I tried this, and Internet Explorer was extremely slow. There were more changes in build 4008, and it booted up faster than the original leak. It could run most programs I threw at it. Both though IMHO do not make suitable workstation operating systems as they both have alpha coding in them. They are suprisingly stable for their alpha states, but not really worth running except for a look at what M$ has up their sleeves...

Right now the only thing on my HDD is M$ Windows XP Pro w/ SP1. Linux just doesn't have my interest as much as it used too. Since I have gotten my xbox I have used mIRC, and FlashFXP lots. I don't think xchat, and kbear are good alternatives. I also play Counter-Strike, and I am probably going to get the 1.6 beta which you can ONLY get via Steam. For more information about this go to www.steampowered.com. Trillian has taken it's place as my main IM system. It's similar to Kopete, in that it's an all in one IM solution, AIM, ICQ, IRC, MSN, Yahoo, you name it... Windows has applications like Kazaa Lite, and Nero which I really like. Windows runs faster on my machine than any linux distro I have tried (After significant tweaking), including Redhat 8.0, Mandrake 9.0, Progeny Debian installer, Debian 3.0, Gentoo 1.4RC2 (Although I never got damn X working on that...., YOPER linux RC2, and YOPER linux RC3, and JAMD linux 0.0.4, and 0.0.5. If I were to go back to linux I would use JAMD linux, which is by far my fav. Linux Distro. But from a students point of view (without a job) Piracy is sometimes a solution. I mean I really can't afford Office XP, or Windows XP. I will admit some of the programs I use are not legit. I will not say that I believe piracy is right, or should be viewed as so, but when the biggest monopoly in the world forces software down our throat, sometimes we must obtain this overly-priced software by other means... When good software is obtainable for free it is hard not to give in. Of course microsoft windows (even when you don't pay for it) has it's drawbacks. You should have the latest version of a virus scanner running on your system at all times. This sucks up memory! You also have to defrag your system, and run various programs to keep your PC 'healthy'. Programs such as Ad-aware 6.0, Regclean, Jv16 power tools, scandisk etc. Plus out-of-the-box almost every single M$ OS is bloated an does not give you ANY option to what is installed! The security holes are aplenty, and you always need to watch what your doing, and how your system is. Any Microsoft operating system is not a secure OS IMHO. But these are many pluses to using an M$ OS, and it is why I do so. I must admit I do miss linux, but I have always hated the idea of dual-booting. Today I am getting a 40 gig 7200 RPM HDD. I am planning to put on Windows XP Media Center Edition, and maybe JAMD linux 0.0.5 each with 20 gigs to themselfs. It's just there are so many M$ programs that I enjoy using the usage of linux for a Desktop OS is not that fun. Linux however is great when you have the 2.4.20 kernel running with fluxbox as the WM. XMMS is 1.2.7 is the best mp3 player I have EVER used! mplayer with gui enabled is the best movie player I have ever used (Even better than Xbox Media Player 2.3, and that's hard to beat!). But in the end there are many reasons I use M$ as my sole OS, and here are probably the top 10.
1. Faster than most Linux Distro's
2. Boot up faster than all the distro's I have used.
3. Better software programs
4. Ability to turn my SBlive! into an 'audigy' with some software driver modification, and the ability to load all the Audigy2 software :O)
5. Easy to use
6. More games
7. More people use it, and it's easier to adress their problems when you have the system in front of you.
8. Linux takes time!
9. Better support for my hardware
10. Can modify my BIOS with a utility (Now it when my comp boots up using the latest modfied HoneyX bios it say's 'Xbox Your Next Gen Sytem' in the official Xbox font. With an xbox theme on my comp it makes my comp look cool ;)

Well this turned into just another post of why I went back to the dark side, but hey at least I am not supporting M$ ... If I had the money I would probably purchase the Operating System simply because pirating is not a right thing to do, and I have morals. At the same time I am a 15 year old person w/out a job. Although I may get one soon with the local computer shop dude. I am happy with running windows and almost felt it neccesary to provide an explaination why I haven't posted here in a while, and perhaps why I don't plan to. Maybe I will come back to linux who knows... Until then goodbye everyone, and thanks for all the help you have provided me with :D!

Yes and it's NVTV1 for the xbox.
Only 640x480 and 720x480 work on my TVs. 800x600 doesn't work well (too tiny).

Oh well, the xbox was really for games anyway. Linux is just a bonus. :)
