I am all for open source and I use Linux at home but there is something that bothers me with Open Source.

Example:

Lets say that the Military has writen a program that gives the Armed Forces A GREAT edge on the BattleField.
If they GPL it of course the software would get better, leaner, meaner and faster but, it would mean that now the enemy has that piece of software and thus they will know the edge that you have and even worst they will replicate it and use it against you.

Your thoughts?

you can modify the source for your own (army) use, no one forces you to give the code back in the wild. It'll stay in the army  1 :D

You don't HAVE to publish whatever you do when using GPL software. The only time you need to distribute the source is if you publish the software (download or resale).

If they never publish it, they never have to release the source...now if someone leaks it and publish it, then they are liable for the source (and treason if it was from the US military ;))

My thoughts? The military can think more than 5 seconds into the future. They wouldn't use that license in the first place!

Duh...
