Dangit! -if one of the first things you have to configure is WINE then you should be using Windows!
I am sooo tired of these people who have only one first question "Help! I need help to configure Wine to run my Windows ****** program" -oh please! It's not like you aren't already using Windows -USE WINDOWS to run your Windows software!

Yes, but I don't see how you can hate them if their trying to get Windows OFF of their machine completely ;). Plus, some people (like me) just like to do things to see if they can... hell, I always install WINE, WINEX-CVS, etc. but never do much of anything with them when everything's running fine...

I dunno... I haven't ran windows forever, and I discovered you need windows installed in ordere to have WINE run the programs correctly.
There was once something I needed WINE to run... but I have forgotten what it was!!
i use crossover to run ePhod for my iPod and to keep office around for some docs that open office doesn't like (gets used for 5 mins like once every 3 months lol). i also use crossover plugin - because it just works. i also use winex to play some games.
i sort of agree with CMonster though, especially for people who want to run an app where there is a native Linux equivalent (esp. Kazaa).

I tried commandline kazaa for linux... it was sloppy and I rarely was ever able to connect, not to mention when I did I rarely got 1/4 of the speed I was capable of. So in that case, kazaa running on wine is ideal, and I must admi that I do miss kazaa at times.

I don't hate anybody, I just get very frustrated with the idea that a person hasn't even had Linux installed on their box for 3-days and they are right away asking how to get their favorite Windows program running before they even know what programs are available for Linux or what the /etc directory is for. I honestly know of people who have been playing with Linux for 3+ months and trying to get WINE up and running, and didn't have a clue that their printer was not supported at all in Linux -that is until they finally got around to trying to print something.

I use WINE for only one program, ClrMAME Pro, which I have not been able to find a Linux equivilant of. It runs as well and as fast as it does in Windows and I don't have Windows anywhere on my system either.
I will be trying out WineX soon too. I tried the CVS version and found that it did not run any of the 10 games that I tried (None are listed in the WineX games list), but I still have hopes that the full version of WineX may be able to run some of them.

I, frankly, don't even like WINE. If I wanna play my Unreal Tournament or Quake, I boot into Win98SE. Much easier.
Kazaa? Am I just stupid... or maybe just not "in the know"... I use gtk-gnutella. Seems to me that program leaves Kazaa in the dust, no?
To be honest: I do run Macromedia's Studio MX and some Bible programs in Win4Lin. WINE was a nightmore to configure for all that, and dual-booting left me... piecemealed. So, I dropped 70 bucks on a GOOD product and left WINE to to the configuration hobbiests.
When will Macromedia port to Linux...?
Anyway, just my 2 pennies. I agree. Learn LINUX first. You may find out you don't need WINE as much as you thought.

Quake 1 and 2 you can get the source for, if you really want.

Yeah, I know. Two problems...
1. I hardly ever play games, so it has yet be worth my effort (and I've been on Linux for .... eh, several months now).
2. I played those first-person shooter games so much that I got motion sick, and now I can't stand to play them anymore.
But, every once in a while my kids will wanna watch me wax some people on the pc, so I reboot and have some "father and son bonding time." (And, if anyone reading this is agast that I would expose my children to such violence, send me a pm with your name and address so I can hunt you and...)
JUST KIDDING!!!

This might help. Soon, with Longhorn and it's designed incompatibility with old programs, Windows people will be asking how do I get Wine working on Longhorn. :D
