My HP 7935 has the "usual" 128mb SDRAM 133 memory installed. I am going to boost that to 512mb (at minimum) very shortly.
I am wondering which route would be the best option: 1(. install a single 512kb for a total of 640mb or 2). install 2 new 256mb units?
I am leaning toward the 256mb units (2) but also think a single 512mb would be fine especially if I wanted to bump to the 1gb limit for this machine.
There really is not that much difference in price for the initial move (2 - 256 vs 1 512) if you take into account the incentives or rebates that are often available.

If the board can take it then go with the single 512 mb stick. leaves room for more later.

As above...
If you get the 512 in one slot then (providing the motherboard supports it) you can put in another 512 in future.
cram as much RAM in as that mobo can hold (the more the better), unless you dualboot with Win98 which i hear has problems with RAM any higher than 512 without some tweak which i am unsure of...
does anyone know of a tweak for Win98 to let it accept more RAM than 512 ???

Yep:
fdisk
delete all partitions
install Linux.

I'd go with the single 512. You can find memory on the web for cheap without using rebates.
Okie: That's a "feature" Read more -> http://www.ivnet.com/512mb_max.htm

I think that the question is Would having two sticks of RAM be faster than having a single stick of RAM if they both total up to the same size.
Using my minimal knowledge of hardware I would assume that all the RAM is on the same bus and as such only one piece of RAM called communicate with the system at once. Therefore I believe that there wouldn't be any speed loss due to the use of a single strip of RAM. If there is any speed loss it would be un-noticable and would occur when using two sepurate pieces of RAM.
In my computer I have 3 sticks of 256mb of RAM. I recently had some trouble with one of the pieces not been detected which was soon fixed by moving the pieces around a few times.
If you have multiple sticks of RAM in your computer it would mean that if one failed your computer could still use the other sticks until the broken one was replaced.
I am assuming that you only have two slots for RAM on your motherboard and as such if I would recommend the 512mb stick and you still have the 128mb stick for your system to use if it fails ever.
