I have 3 comp. one (mine) has win me and mandrake 9, #2 and #3 have win 98 all three can access the internet, when comp. #1 is in win me my network works fine, when comp. #1 is in linux, the win 98 comp. cannot access the printer or files, I have samba 2.2.6pre2, I can start and stop smb and nmb, I can see from the win 98 comp, my computer in network neighborhood, it says samba server 2.2.6pre2, but when I click on the computer icon it asks for a password for \\BOB\IPC$ I type the password that I use for win, and linux, and gives me an error this password is incorrect,try again.
if I can see the samba server in a win 98 machine then samba is working why can I not get past the password if I set it up the same way as the windows network.? please help I have been at this a very long time.

Do you have user accounts identical on both win and linux boxes?

on the linux box :

smbpasswd -a <username>

thank-you that worked I see what is in my linux box, a printer that I don't know if it is working or not a folder that is named after my daughter and a pdf generated printer could be the printers I tried to setup, the folder under my daughters name, I click on it and it takes me to a tmp folder, with nothing in it just like if I was going to follow the path /etc/home that same folder is in there except I don't see my sons folder in the windows machine, can you tell me how to setup a printer that is connected to a hub on my win me/linux box? also I installed mandrake a couple of times trying to figure this networking thing out. I had a version of 2.2.7 before this time I have 2.2.6pre2 how do I get the other ver. back or install samba 2.2.7 from a downloaded rpm. one more thing what do I need to do know to be able to see files and folders, and or apps in linux from a win 98 machine.

Not to familiar with Mandrake but there should be a GUI app that you can setup a printer with. Probably in the Drake Control Center.

Why do you need the version back?

do I need to do know to be able to see files and folders, and or apps in linux from a win 98 machine.

In your smb.conf file at the very bottom you should see some examples of sharing folders. Take a look at that and I think you should be able to figure the rest out.

Call me a troll or whatever, but I have used a program called webmin to configure Samba and it has been a lifesaver. Do a Google on webmin and install it, and Samba will suddenly become MUCH easier to configure.
