I am learning linux for the first time! *yay!*. Anyway, I want to start from the basics with linux, like learning the commands in shell, configuring everything, etc. I just want a good base in Linux so that I can start learning more on my own without having to look back for simple commands and procedures.

Anyone know of any good books out there to teach Linux newbies the basics?

Thanks!

I have read a couple of the "big" books that you can buy in the book stores, and for the most part I must say I was unimpressed.

The majority of the ones that I saw seem to be little more than taking all the howto's that are available on the internet and making them into one giant disorganized book.

The two that I have right now that I like are for the Linux+ certification.

Linux+ Certification Bible
Trevor Kay

Linux+ Certification Exam Guide
Jeff Durham

These books will teach you all the essentials. There are also excellent references all over the net:

They have Idiots guides and For dummies books for linux. It has been my experience that just get things up and running one step at a time and every time you want to use a new feature you will do some searching here or elsewhere and find yourself picking up more and more stuff over time.

I agree, Linux+ books will give you the best BASIC overview of the Linux Operating system in the least amount of time -though they are kind of dry reading.

Sure, just DL and install Mandrake 9.1 and Rute's Tutorial is right there to install.

It's a real nice .PDF file....

You should try the Linux Newbie Administrator Guide (LNAG). It's some really good reading covering everything from basics to upgrading the kernel and everything in between. It is located at http://linux-newbie.sunsite.dk/.
