Hi,
I'm a College Student living in a dorm. All of the computers are hooked up to a network. I'm able to surf around the network with no problems in Windows XP, but I can't figure out Samba for the life of me. My question is, How do I log onto the network?
Lets say the following is true...
I want my PC name to be: shellyII
The network is: someschool.edu
username is: s222473
password is: catfish
How do I log onto the NT domain? What files do I need to create/modify? Any help would be appreciated.

You will have to figure out Samba if you want to interact with a Win domain. Have you tried to configure Samba at all yet? If you have, tell us exactly what you've done and what problems/errors you're encountering and we can take it from there.
Stepping you through a Samba setup would make for one heck of a long post, but with all of the Samba-related references on Web, I'd suggest that you try some Google searches for "Samba" and read carefully through some of the resulting sites.
Try as much of the configuration as you can, and post any specific questions you might have as you go along. Also look into "SWAT"; it a graphical Samba utility which will can make the setup easier than hand-hacking your /etc/smb.conf config file.

Yeah, are you just trying to mount shares on the network? If you type findsmb it will give you a list of all the computers on your subnet that are sharing at least something using smb. This may be a verrry long list depending on the size of the network though. If it is just like maybe a share on something like //studentserver.yourschool.edu/yourshare$ then you can mount that with the mount command with share type smbfs.

Did you setup SAMBA at all?
I have a SAMBA document I'm working on that might be of help if so. Its still in the works but let me know if you want it.

You could also try LinNeighborhood as the GUI frontend for setting up SAMBA shares...works just great for me : http://www.bnro.de/~schmidjo/
