Hello everybody,
I have experienced both the player-side and immortal-side on various different MUDs (multi-user dungeons) over the years and I have developped the urge to attempt _running_ my own.
I have asked around, and have come to the conclusion that this venture will require me to explore the wonderful world of linux. However, I still have no idea really where to start, as I am a Microsoft Windows user.
With so many distros of linux available, I'm really not sure at all where to start. I've heard lots of good things about Slackware (but I'm told it's not a good distro to learn on). Then there's SuSE, Debian, Mandrake and RedHat that have been brought to my attention.
My plan is to install a distro as the sole operating system on a box without internet access. I will then load a MUD source code (ROM 2.4, or SMAUG) and attempt to learn the intricacies of coding and maintaining a MUD in my spare time.
Anybody with suggestions on choosing the right distro for me, or insight regarding the intracacies of MUD coding, please respond by e-mail. Thanks for taking the time to read my post,
