Ok everybody, heres my question with a bit of an intro:
My company is looking to phase Win2k file servers out and linux servers in, and we have begun a small test project. After an intial implementation of SAMBA, everyone was favarobly impressed. The powers above, however, also want to enable users to remotely access their files from home. It seems to be a bit of an overkill to institute a company wide VPN for this kind of thing, and I was wondering if anybody could offer any suggestions about stable remote file server products. Beeweeb's Internet File Server looks promising, but it costs a bundle for the enterprise edition of the software. I thought that maybe one of those remote file access perl/php scripts would work well, but I haven't found a bug-free and stable one in testing. All of the employees who would use this remote file access have windows machines, and their technical knowledge is not tremendously advanced. Would a simple FTP server work best since it can be accessed from most windows-based web browsers? Anybody have any other suggestions, or links to good idea? As always, thanks for any tips you can send my way...

FTP (Proftpd etc.) may be what you need.

Try these freshmeat.net search results for 'remote file access' (http://freshmeat.net/search/?q=remote+file+access&section=projects) to see what else you can find.
