I down loaded and installed Netscape 7. The default installation included plugins libflashplayer.so and libnullplugin.so but no java. No java, no applets.

I have SuSE 8.1 and YaST2 shows tht java2-jre 1.3.1 is installed. I need help in configuring my system so that Netscape 7 can use the installed java.

Java2-1.3.1 plugin files are at:
/usr/lib/SunJava2-1.3.1/jre/plugin/i386/ns600/libjava/plugin_oji.so
/usr/lib/SunJava2-1.3.1/jre/plugin/i386/ns4/javaplugin.so

Config file at:
/etc/java/java2-jre.conf

Plugins directories at:
/home/bruhoh/.netscape/plugins (empty directory)
/home/bruhoh/.netscape6/plugins (empty directory)

/usr/local/netscape/plugins (includes libflashplayer.so, libnullplugin.so)
These are the plugins listed at Home > About Plug-ins for Netscape.

/opt/netscape/plugins (includes libflashplayer.so, libnullplugin.so, nppdf.so, rpnp.so)
These are the plugins listed at Home > About Plug-in for Mozilla.

Thanks for any help.

cd ~/.netscape

cd plugins

ln -s /usr/lib/SunJava2-1.3.1/jre/plugin/i386/ns600/libjava/plugin_oji.so plugin_oji.so

Hayl, thank you for the reply. I was not successful. I retrieved, reviewed and tried the following install instructions from Netscape. Your suggestion is their step #3 except they specify /.netscape6 versus ./netscape.

Netscape's install instructions:

1. rm /home/bruhoh/.netscape/plugins/javaplugin.so

2. export NPX_PLUGIN_PATH=/usr/lib/SunJava2-1.3.1/jre/plugin/i386/ns4

3. ln -s /home/bruhoh/.netscape6/plugins /usr/lib/SunJava2-1.3.1/jre/plugin/i386/ns600/libjava/plugin_oji.so plugin_oji.so

4. restart Netscape two times. Second time due to bug 4358142.

I do not understand step #2 and therefore could not confirm if I performed it properly.

Again, thanks for any suggestions or hints.

One more request for help. Please ignore the previous. I know this should be simple but.... Any hints, comments, suggestions would be appreciated. Sorry that this has been covered before but I'm at at loss for a solution.

Problem:
Netscape 7 Java plug-in not working.

What I did:
I installed Netscape (works fine) and java. Did following to get java to work with Netscape:

1 - rm /home/bruhoh/.netscape/plugins/javaplugin.so. That directory was empty.

2 - Created text file /etc/profile.local with the following contents: "export NPX_PLUGIN_PATH = /usr/lib/SunJava2-1.3.1/jre/plugin/i386/ns4" Ran same command from terminal and then ran set|more to confirm path was accepted - OK.

3 - Linked libjavaplugin_oji.so file to /usr/local/netscape/plugins with following command from that dir
ln -s /usr/lib/SunJava2-1.3.1/jre/plugin/i386/ns600/libjavaplugin_oji.so plugin_oji.so. Used Konqueror to verify link - @libjavaplugin_oji.so was listed. Note that /home/bruhoh/.netscape6/plugins is linked to /usr/local/netscape/plugins so same files listed there.

4 - Opened Netscape and checked Help > About Plug-ins. Java plug-in 1.3.1_04-b02 was listed but I still was unable to open Webmin File Manager or Yahoo Chat which require java.

Set|more includes:
JAVA_HOME = /usr/lib/java/jre
PATH = /usr/lib/java/jre/bin
note
/usr/lib/java is linked to /usr/lib/SunJava2-1.3
/usr/lib/SunJava2-1.3.1 is lined to /usr/lib/SunJava2-1.3.1
NPX_PLUGIN_PATH = /usr/lib/SunJava2-1.3.1/jre/plugin/i386/ns4

SunJava2-1.3.1 plugin files are at:
/usr/lib/SunJava2-1.3.1/jre/plugin/i386/ns600/libjavaplugin_oji.so
/usr/lib/SunJava2-1.3.1/jre/plugin/i386/ns4/javaplugin.so

Config file at:
/etc/java/java2-jre.conf

OTHER NOTES:

Plugins directories at:
/home/bruhoh/.netscape/plugins (empty directory)
/home/bruhoh/.netscape6/plugins (linked to /usr/local/netscape/plugins)

/usr/local/netscape/plugins (includes libflashplayer.so, libnullplugin.so)
These are the plugins listed at Home > About Plug-ins for Netscape.

OOPS deleted libnullplugin.so, tried to copy from /opt/netscape/plugins but not recognized by Netscape in Home > About Plug-ins.

/opt/netscape/plugins (includes libflashplayer.so, libnullplugin.so, nppdf.so, rpnp.so) These are the plugsins listed at Home > About Plug-ins for Mozilla.

I can't run netscape from root. /usr/local/netscape/netscape.
