I have tried to install new Mandrake 9 from CD, everything seems to be normal until when the DrakX just going to copying files, the screen turn black, then appearing message : Image not recognized, kernel panic. Then reboot itself, and starting from the beginning again. The result is the same when I try from another harddrive. What's wrong? I'm using Win 2000 SP3 in primary drive (hda) and planned tu have Mandrake in secondary drive (hdb). Note that I never get this problem when installing Mandrake 8.x, nor ever have message like that(kernel panic).

Did you create the cd's yourself? Veryify the iso image prior to burning and then the resulting cd?
Verifying and burning help can be found at http://www.linuxiso.org/
Anything else besides 'Kernal Panic'? Any other error messages/codes?
You could try disabling power management in the bios.

Thanks for the answer! I've tried ur suggestion, but it didn't solve the problem. Btw, the problem came from my own hardware..... I forgot to set the 2nd harddrive jumper into 'slave' :p This solution just came to remember when I saw my installation log record by the time I install Unix long ago. So boyz and girlz, always check 'n recheck ur machine carefully before OS instalation! Thanks again ! Oh ya this message written with Mozzila from my new Mandrake 9

I just installed Mandrake v9 on my old Dell Pentium Pro 200mhz machine so that I could learn more about Linux (I'm brand new to the Linux world).
Things are running extremely slow (much slower than Win2K Pro that was previously installed on the machine).
The install went extremely smoothly. All the hardware appeared to be recognized correctly (video card, hard disks, CD ROM, ethernet card, etc).
I have 128 megs of RAM, 16 megs of video memory, 256 K cache. The hard disks are pretty speedy ones, too. I would think it would run a bit more reasonably.
Opera v6 runs at an acceptable pace, but Konqueror and Mozilla are pretty pokie. The OpenOffice word processor is a complete exercise in patience.
Would maybe running a different distribution speed things up? (suggestions? - can of worms, I know). Is there any way to identify what might be holding things up? Maybe a diagnostic tool?
Thanks for any help or suggestions...

Well, If u want to run linux on old machine (e.g. Pentium 1), the result is not satisfied you. The only reason is, because newer linux is designed for higher, faster, and stronger machine. That's why when using kernel 2.4.x on X environment it would be high stress to both the computer and user. My suggestion is, if u work most on X server, upgrade PC at least Pentium 3. Otherwise, only use Command line for daily use.
