I see that people here installed KDE and GNOME.

I've read this configuration as an example in the RHLinux8.0 installation manual.

Newbe question: is this redundant? Do we do this simply to have more flexibility / options once installed or is there a more critical reason for installing both GUIs?

Thanks by the way for answering the several similar Newbe questions I come up with while I rtfm.

Absolutely. There are actually 4 window managers installed if you want. GNOME, KDE,
WindowMaker and TWM. There are at least 8 email clients installed, 3 CD burners, 2 office suites, 9 notepad type programs, eterm, xterm, kterm, console, konsole...man the list is endless. The key here is choice. You can install, PLAY with all the programs you want, see which ones you perfer, and then uninstall the ones you don't want, or next upgrade, install what you want. Linux and Open Source = Choices (sometimes too many :D), and with Redhat, Mandrake, etc, they don't want to presume that you will want Konqueror over Mozilla. Evolution over kmail, etc.

Have fun with it all. :)

There are some programs behind the scenes that won't work unless gnome is installed, even if KDE is the current desktop and I would presume vice versa.
