Debian looks like such a damn good distro, but after three failed installs, I'm not so sure.

GA-7VAXP
Athlon XP 2100+
256MB PC2700
Geforce3 Ti 500
WD 60GB(linux) and 40GB(win :( ) -----my system

I've installed Mandrake 9, Red Hat 8, even Slackware 8.1, but I have never had problems fresh from the install like I have had with Debian. In case your wondering, I am using the latest version, and I have all 7 cds.

After each installtion, I logged intro root and tried startx. It didn't work. I then proceeded to use the xf86config command, and set it up correctly(same w/ slackware, and it worked). I try startx, and the same problem occurs each time, something like, "screens found, but not compatible." it's not that, but it's something like it.

if you want an easy method (this will be the way debian is installed by default soon) go to :

http://hackers.progeny.com/pgi

and download their ISO (it's one ISO). GUI installer. Autoconfigures, X, and most hardware.

can you please post your XF86-Config4
Is this the EXACT same XF86-Config you used with the other installations?

Nathan.

I also thought of something,
Kernel drivers for the GeForce Frame Buffer and AGP port.
You might need to re-configure and compile your kernel.
I'm not too sure about nVida cards since I own Matrox cards.

his nvidia card should work just fine with a standard debian install.

if you want to troubleshoot it tho you should post the log (/var/log/XFree86.0.log) and that will tell us exactly what is causing the error.

Do a search for dpkg-reconfigure x-server

This has been covered many times. This is the "new" way for Debian to setup X. When I try the old xf86config I could never get my X setup good but with the new way is sets up fine. I dunno. But do that.
