Am I right in thinking it is not possible to get hold of install cd's to install suse from? As far as I can see, I have to ftp install. This is OK if you have broadband, but with dial up connections this is not a good idea. I know what you are thinking, how is he going to get hold of iso's on dial up. Well, that is easy. Juts d/l at work and burn onto my own r/w cd-roms and take home.

I will be putting debian onto my box I think.

It is not possible to get a hold of them for free from any website. It is possible to buy them boxed in a software store. Some retailers such as Best Buy and other computer oriented stores carry the Personal and Professional editions of SuSe.

yeah, in the UK - even PC World sells SuSE!

I don't think there's anything stopping you making ISO images from someone else's CDs, SuSE just doesn't provide them for download. Though by the sounds of it you don't know anyone with a SuSE box-set anyway.

If you do copy, you should watch out for any non-free software that they bundle with the CDs. I'm not sure if all the non-free stuff is together on one CD or not. One more reason for going with Debian!

You're right. I don't know anyone with Suse, was told it was a very nice system to work with. It can wait for now though, debian will be going on this weekend.

Also, I wouldn't want to give pc world any of my money, especially for a linux distro.

I spent 60 quid on SuSE 7.3 Professional and definitely got my money's worth. (ease of set-up whilst moving house and generally not having time to tinker). So I won't hear a bad word on SuSE. After all, it was the first distro to get me up and running with free software. Would have preferred not to buy it at PC World, but better that than not at all...

But Debian suits me down to the ground now - range of packages, stability and clear guidelines on free software are the main reasons.

You could give your money to Amazon then. I think 8.1 professional is around 40 quid and personal about 25 quid.

That's if you ever decide to leave Debian and give SuSE a go.:)

SuSE is a nice distro, and I liked it when I was using it.

The only thing is (IMHO):

YaST2 is great, but a little bit overprotective - try changing a system file manually, and then running YaST2 - suddenly the file will be back to it's previous incarnation!!

It's also HUGE, which wasn't what I was wanting :(

As to "getting it on CD", I just purchased it directly from SuSE on thier web site!! $39 I do believe. Loaded easily. We do have a few hardware problems:( I couldn't use any of my mice and had to buy a new one (light mouse from Logitech). My brother couldn't get it to load at all on one of his systems, but on the other it went in joyfully!! The only problem he had was that..and get this..WINDOWS refused to load onto the system. And he tried it first!:D That's the first I've heard of Win not loading.

Well, I don't know what $39 is in U.K., but for what you get, it ain't bad.

Good luck

(and that is snoopy, typo to be repaired, I hope.) :)

Oh yah, SuSe has a great section of thier site that has lists of hardware that tells you of problems or no problems. Any of you using SuSe might want to let them know what you are using just to help others along. also what might have been a problem and what didn't work.

I second that: The Linux Emporium is fantastic (if you live in the UK). Order on the web one day, posted first class next day, through your letter box the day after. Made about 4 orders by now, and they were all delivered perfectly.

Particularly useful are the three NICs I ordered. They're Realtek8139-based cards, and I bought them because the people from Linux Emporium have specifically tested and recommended them.
