It would be good if there was a feature on the forum that when you click a thread, it would then mark it as read just like in your email or news reader program. Maybe changing the thread subject color or something?

It does, the next time you load the forum page.
The color of the icon on the left side will have turned from yellow to gray for the threads you've opened in this session.
They all get marked read when you've been inactive for a certain amount of time (it's around 20-30 minutes, but I haven't been able to pin down exactly when it happens). I think this has something to do with the server logging you out.
If you want something to change in the current page as you see it, well... that's not very likely, especially when the pages are built with just plain HTML. Sure, they're dynamically-generated by the vBulletin PHP backend, but once they get to your browser, they're just plain HTML, which is static.
