Slackware8.1 .tgz packages install in it too... http://www.vectorlinux.org/ Any 02-05-2003, 04:19 PM OOOOOO, it comes with IceWM as default? Ive always found KDE to be way too slow on all the machines ive used Linux on. Ill have to give it a go. JesseJames 02-05-2003, 04:24 PM Downloading now. This will be my next port of call in the world of Linux. Just hope this distro is for me.... Okie 02-05-2003, 04:51 PM it took me about 1 hour to download, and since i have four ext2 disk partitions allready made i had it up & running in a few minutes, it has ICEwm as a default wm, also XFCE and a terminal with X , it is an exellent distro for older machines with small amounts of RAM and slow CPUs but it also has current packages so it will also run on newer computers too quite well... HappyTrails:) Okie 02-05-2003, 04:56 PM ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/vectorlinux/veclinux-3.2/iso guitargeek 02-05-2003, 05:52 PM Vector linux = WIN! One of the better distros out there, for sure. carlywarly 02-05-2003, 06:08 PM I've just installed the new version. The antialased fonts look superb in opera, and Top tells me I'm only using about 80 meg of ram(out of 384). It's a very efficient distro. vbp6us 02-05-2003, 09:24 PM Looks interesting...I think i'll use this instead of my SuSE. :( Maybe. I need a fast system for my system is only 400mhz. :) One thing though...the download version doesnt have all apps w./ it. Anyone have the CD version!? Ebay doesnt have it for sale. :( Another thing..they're using LNO logo in the message board: http://www.mathomas.org/public_html/iB_html/non-cgi/Skin/Default/images/logo.gif guitargeek 02-05-2003, 09:30 PM Anyone have the CD version!? You should be able to download the CD version... I did. vbp6us 02-05-2003, 09:56 PM oh...where? which folder is it? Palin 02-05-2003, 11:08 PM looks cool I think I may try it I was trying to get away from Mandrake and Red Hat. Eventually I want to have a LFS system. emetib 02-05-2003, 11:15 PM Originally posted by Palin looks cool I think I may try it I was trying to get away from Mandrake and Red Hat. Eventually I want to have a LFS system. you should check out core. http://coredistro.sourceforge.net/ same as lfs, but it has an installer. you still have to do alot to get it going, just not the make, make configure && make libgcc && make install. i went through the lfs four times thinking that i left something out. kept coming back that it couldn't read the c compilers or something. told it where to go. Palin 02-05-2003, 11:25 PM Thanx emetib I certainly look at it I need to gain a bit more experience before I take that big of a bite. Proudest Monkey 02-05-2003, 11:41 PM I like VL its awesome It is so tight, My laptop is a p150 with 40 mb of ram and it runs fast enough that I don't really notice any slowness or quickness. It feels like its going just the right speed. IceWM by default is running over xfe so you get icons which is totaly awesome. I am very happy with this distribution. Configuration is a breeze it comes with a utility called vasm that pretty much does anykind of system admin stuff you would need to do(like loading modules, configuring the network, adding or removing services at startup). They have a utility called vec get that is like apt-get but without the dependency checks, but it's still way better than nothing. I have a 1.4 gig hard drive and with most distrobutions they have enough fluff to make that amount of space inadequate. Not so with vector linux, with 472MB of "Real Life" packages and most of which are stuff I would use I am not wanting for space. It's slackware 8.1 package compatible so you totaly can find and install al the neat-o software that is available, but you could default install and have everything you would ever need, xmms plays audio cds as well as mp3's and it comes with a good calculator, and word processor. Opera for webrowsing (I'll look at the banner it's 10 times faster than any Mozilla, Mozilla-base. or Konqueror (I can open 4 opera windows and my system doesn't trudge into unusable slowness which finally ends with a couple mozilla windows closing of their own accord) . Finally you can tell the author of this distrobution put alot of time, and thought into the details. By default your bash displays color, and a clock. The window managers xfce and icewm are both GTK based so it's like gnome on speed, because unlike gnome both these window managers are light. fast, and easy on your resources. Well I could go on but I am out of coffee...sufficed to say I am a VL user for life and with it's slackware compatibility you get all the coolness and personality of a tiny distrobution but the resouces of a big one. *I am not employed by VL and I wasn't paid to write this even though seeing it it sounds like a tv commercial, but tonight I feel like my time learning linux was not wasted, and there definetly is an alternate OS period. guitargeek 02-06-2003, 01:11 AM oh...where? which folder is it? /iso http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/vectorlinux/veclinux-3.2/iso/ I haven't used 3.2, but 3.0 is great, so 3.2 has to be even better. JesseJames 02-06-2003, 11:12 AM I tried it for a few minutes but it wouldnt let me use either my USB mouse or my PS/2 mouse even after I restarted. Iv gone back to Mandrake for now until I can find something else. sasKuatch 02-06-2003, 11:52 AM Originally posted by carlywarly I've just installed the new version. Whats a light alternative to KDE that looks very similar if not better? Thanks again sasquatch...this post seems deja vu for me...i dont why.  guitargeek 02-06-2003, 08:55 PM Originally posted by sasKuatch http://www.click-smilie.de/sammlung/sprachlos/sprachlos003.gif http://www.click-smilie.de/sammlung/sprachlos/sprachlos003.gifhttp://www.click-smilie.de/sammlung/sprachlos/sprachlos003.gifhttp://www.click-smilie.de/sammlung/sprachlos/sprachlos003.gif 80 MEGS??? Even when I run blackbox, I'm still using 100MB, no programs running. When I'm actually DOING things, all my RAM (256) is being used, and a bit of swap too. AnakiMana 02-07-2003, 07:14 PM I agree with Proudest Monkey... I've got Vector Linux running on my P133 laptop with only 32mb of RAM. It's very fast and I appreciate all the detail that's gone into it! Especially with the vasm program and very easy installer! My old laptop feels like a brand new system (fast) running a brand new OS. justlinux.com
