Does anyone know of a good, free news server? I use dp-news.maxwell.syr.edu
but, lately it's crapped out on me. I used to be able to get what I wanted off there, but not so in the past couple of days. I wonder if they closed the "backdoor" that let folks in for free (just to download, not to upload).

My dad is a huge railfan in Minnesota, and I live in Costa Rica. He posts his train pics on alt.binaries.pictures.rail - an interesting sub-cultural of "foamers" (railfans). I'd go into dp-news and grab his pics, use them as wallpapers or whatever (they're actually very scenic - his, not everyone's train pics). It's mainly just something fun me and my dad do over the net (him on his monster G4 with 22" Cinema Display, and me on my Linux box).

He uses giganews, but I don't wanna pay for something I won't "use." And since I don't upload, or comment, or anything - just download my Dad's pics - I'd like to find something decent and... free. :-)

Posting or reading?

There are plenty of free, anonymous Usenet posting servers, but I have yet to find a free one to read (other than Yahoo and Google, which sux0r because they don't have the binaries in them).

It's to read. Download binaries (pics of trains).

Yeah, my isp has a free news server, but it's a joke. I live in Costa Rica so the only isp is the government (no kidding - socialism at its best). Service is okay, but nowhere near where it could be. The news server will carry maybe 20% of the binaries. And then... I miss out.

If you wanna check out some really good "scenic" train shots, check out alt.binaries.pictures.rail and sort on name, looking for "Vlad." That's my dad. He has some really good stuff out there. He's turned down jobs for magazines and train books. Says it's a hobby and if he did it for "work," it wouldn't be fun anymore. Ah, the life of a retiree! :-)
