For years I have used a hotmail address as my public email, because I'd rather have it spammed than my personal one. I have had no problems accessing it with Opera until a few months ago.
Then, it kept giving errors that my "Cookies Aren't Enabled" which they are. Why did it work an hour earlier and not then? Didn't matter how I ID'd my browser or the cookie settings, it was still the same result.
I tried logging in with Opera on a couple of friends' boxes and it did the same thing.
Mozilla/Phoenix have no probs.
I emailed their support numerous times with no response and the FAQ's have nothing on it.
An industry insider in Vancouver said "Microsoft is trying to purge the market of renegade browsers".
Funny thing is, Netscape did the same thing a week later, only they were more blatent about it with the error "You are using a non-standard browser and cannot continue. Please use IE4+ or Netscape6 to log in".
Any other Opera users have this with Hotmail?

MS will never give up on these kind of tactics -they have worked in the past.

I agree, MS does not play fair with others the do not adhere to open standers, & they will not change any time soon unless they are forced to by the consumer

Can't opera pretend it is IE? I know Konqueror can. Just set Opera up so it IDs itself as IE.

I find that sometimes it plays the cookie game, usually it just gives me a screen asking me to download IE then lets me carry on. When it's in the mood to be awkward, I've found 3 ways around it:
Tell Opera to identify as MSIE (doesn't always work)
Go to www.hotmail.co.uk instead of ~.com (they don't seem to do the same on both sites at the same time)
Open amsn and use its link to open Hotmail
Another way is to use a better web-based mail service, which I do for trusted mail, but Hotmail has the advantage of a big company behind it which makes it less likely to go belly-up or start compulsory charging a few months after you sign up.

I've never had any trouble accessing my hotmail accounts thru Opera.
What I do have trouble with are some of my credit card sites.
One of 'em was CapitalOne...I sent a "suggestion" to them that they should make the site workable in *all* browsers. They actually listen to their customers because the next time I visited the site to pay my bill Mozilla worked great.

I use opera under linux and I didn't have any problems checking my msn mail through the hotmail site. Sorry. :(

My girlfriend accesses hotmail all the time in Mozilla and Phoenix, no trouble, so I don't know why Netscape wouldn't work.

A solution... Mozilla/Phoenix ;)

Give me Pop3 or give me death. I use Opera and other than some weird font rendering, I can see almost any MS site just fine. Why use hotmail? There are a lot of free email sites that support more than IE. Using hotmail in Linux is sleeping with the enemy in my humble opinion...:D

So it sounds like some have probs and some do not
For those who suggest I re-ID the browser, re-read my original post. Did it, done it.
linux12414: I empathize. I couldn't online bank for the longest time until my credit union, who just dumped M$ keister and switched to *nix. They eliminated the compatibility probs with browsers and were also the only CU remaining up a couple of weeks ago when the worm hit the M$ servers.
The solution of Phoenix is what I'm using now for Hotmail and I have abandoned Netscape addresses all together. Last I checked eight months ago, they both had the full 5MB limit of spam anyway.
TheCatMan: Thanks! This may just be the goldmine I was looking for :)
Thank you all for responding :D

I've completely abandoned Hotmail. I went with www.linuxmail.org for my "anonymous" web-based email needs. :)
