Alright, I was in a meeting this morning with an academic task force for my college, and one of the administrators pulled out screenshots of some statitistics to pass around. To my suprise, he used KDE.
I mean, I'm not suprised that all my computer science professors use linux, with one of them even have a clipping comparing some Hitler quote to Microsofts "one World, One Operating System, one Program", but I must say that I was shocked that some administrator who isn't even in a technology field was using linux.
Anyways, any other seen people using linux that suprised them?

My mother
Especially after all the grief that she sees me having with it. Course, i'm aiming for the uber-optimized sleek machine, but she's happy with a chunky install of MDK.

Honestly..not yet. I would like to though. Its must feel pretty weird huh?
Well there was someone on Counter-strike that said he was running Slack 8. :) I dont know if he was lying but i also dont know why someone would lie about what OS theyre using. Most CS players are either too stupid(most) or too young to know what linux is. That is a fact.

Evidently, people must think that you are lying if you announce you're using linux... as numerous times on irc if I stated I run linux, I soon found my self being version'd by a whole bunch of people...
I wonder if they thought they would perhaps get a response that I was using mIRC?
Either way, they were left unsatisfied, as my script replies random quotes whenever someone versions me. :D

your absolutly right vbp6us! But I cannot see why you are playing CS still, when there is something better! It's called Tactical Ops, a mod for UT2003. Honestly it's the only game on this earth that's better (and more fun ;) ) than CS. Believe me I have played UT, UT2003, Q3 Arena, MOHAA, Half-life, Mechwarrior 4 Vengence, Warcraft 3, Command and Conquer Tiberian Sun, Deus Ex, Halo, James Bond 007, Nightfire, and TONS of others. It's the only game/mod IMHO that beats CS. I bought the retail, even though I have UT Game of the Year edition, b/c it was only 15 dollers! (And the fact that my bro payed for it ;) ) I have to say it was worth EVERY penny.

So does Tactical Ops have a Linux Port or not?

My girlfriend LOVES her Mandrake machine. I ended up installing that instead of trying to get Windows to work (again). From day one, all she had was trouble with it. Now with Mandrake, it's as stable as the rock of Gilbralter.

My Mom lent her Mandrake 8.2 CDs to a friend (over 65, under, close anyway) who saw her using it. She was an administrator at her work (the person lent to so not a newbie to computers, but no expert by any means). Installed it herself and now uses it. I guess she didn't know it was hard. Now she'll ask my Mom for tips. LOL.:D

Note: The computer was a dead weight anyway. Windows 3.1 and no hope of upgrading.

If you ever break up with her, give me her number. I'm having a hard enough time finding a girl who doesn't respond with "Oh you use 98 then?" when I say I don't use Windows. :(

When ever I come on these boards I feel like a square peg in a round hole.
Most of you seem to be in college or are college educated (which was very smart on your part). Or seem to be much younger than me.
I am a 34 y/o railroad worker(carman/welder). I repair frieght cars. I have no education above high school. I never touch a computer until Dec.'98. Now I have a hard time turning it off.
I am very surprised I am using an OS like Slackware . I am more surprised that more people aren't using it.
edit:I forgot that I went to college for 1 semester.

There is a 'hack' for it somewhere......can't remeber where but it does exist.
TO is based on UT, so it's probably based on the UT installer :)

So...i saw some screens and it does look better than CS! Its similar but different in its own way. :) More info please. Is it free?

Tactical ops is a FREE modification to UT. There are the special forces, and the terrorists. (similar to CS). There are better graphics, better sound effects, and most importantly better gameplay. The weapons are better, and there is no gun that EVERYONE uses. The AK47, and M4A1 are much different in TO. Tactical Ops is a action-packed-cs-on-crack! It's basically better than CS in every way, plus it has more of an arcadish feel to it, that I like. I don't like fast paced arcadish games like UT, or UT2003 much, but they can be fun at times. As I said it is the only game in the whole world that I can honestly say is better than CS. It also runs smoother, b/c it is made with the ut engine, and not the half life engine. I believe the HL engine cap the FPS @ 100 or so, so you can not notice a difference there. I would recomend a 1 ghz processor, 256 RAM, and a Geforce 2 (NOT MX) line of vidcards.
BTW: Of ourse there is a linux 'port' why would I mention TO on a linux forum if it can't be run under linux
Anyway you just copy the folders directories over if you have the mod version, and there is an unofficial installer for the retail, which I use now. (I have used both, they both work well :O)
EDIT: Check out the 'UT 2003 and Mods for Linux!' thread under the Games section of the LNO forums. O wait a sec the JL forums (That doesn't sound right...) Ok THESE FORUMS!
Arggghhh I hate the name change!

Me... I teach religion in a liberal arts college, and as far as I know I'm the only person on this side of campus who uses Linux... most of them don't even know what it is. I try my best to edumacate folks on the subject, especially by giving out Knoppix CDs like crazy (I wrote a detailed "how to use this CD, and start up a few programs" instruction sheet).
My chief conspirator is a math prof who is also on the "Academic Computing Committee" with me... We're trying to switch the school as much as possible to libre/oss software. The first thing to go (hopefully): NT file servers that students with XP Home can't even connect to.
I also try to get all of my students to check out Linux. If a sizeable portion of the student body starts using it, then we'd have to put a few Tux machines in the labs (other than the CS "linux lab" that closes at 5pm!).
Thanks for listening...

My grandparents senior center.
The High Speed access was donated.
Netgear firewall/router and 4 linux PCs.
The amazing thing is how easy it is to teach them to use it, since most of them never used Windows. Windows stunts your growth.
All PCs have KDE, Gnome, Blackbox, Fluxbox, IceWM (default).
Choice of browsers. OpenOffice. Networked HP6L printer.
We decided that Web based email was the easiest for everyone.
I worked with a local Boy Scout troop to set it up. Scouts take turns providing support.
Truely a rewarding experience.

That's the story, though I haven't actually used it. It is run by the math department, and they use it for class-time instruction. They evidently lock it up when all the faculty leave for the day.
I'm sure it's a support issue. The support for Linux around here is non-existent, so they don't want people wandering in to print out their powerpoint slides and being like, "WTF?"
My hope is that Linux will be added as an officially supported platform, that Linux machines will be accessible in the labs, and that people will stop insisting on closed, proprietary platforms. This applies to course management sytems, email, file servers, and productivity suites. We do have some Linux/Unix servers running things like the web-page (apache) and student records. But, we have a long way to go on the user end.
Part of it is ignorance, part is inertia, but most of it is FUD. They have all of the lab machines locked down with Centurion, so I can imagine that the idea of a powerful Linux desktop scares them. What they don't realize is that it is so much more securable than Windows, and will be easier to protect and maintain. Centurion basically restores the drive to an imaged state after a person logs out/reboots. A heavy-handed, blunt instrument of system administration... a permissions based system is so much more configurable and elegant.
Oh, enough ranting and shouting... I'm preaching to the choir, I know.
