I find the best way to go about learning usage and configuration is to decide on some projects to work on.
Also, I'm sure you have noticed, the documentation is not always easy to follow. I find it helps to cross reference man pages, whatever is available in /usr/share/doc, and doing a google search to maybe find a helpful webpage. (Or a search on that Justlinux site.)
If you can't even get Linux installed and the GUI up and running then you may want to call it quits, at least for a while. If you have a sucessful install, the GUI is working, you are online with email and internet, and etc, then there is no rush to "learn linux".
Computers have thousands of different functions and I always find it interesting that everyone finds their own interests.

Dude, I was stupid the first time I used Linux, I still am but I'm getting better and so will you. Think about it, where you a Windows expert the first time you sat down in front of it?

raggie30 hey bro. u can always join irc and try puplic channels and talk to people. .. when u say learning linux, u dont actually LEARN IT. u use it. u can say once u got it running on ur computer. u use the applications and programs inside. dunno. i've been using it for 2 years, and there are still things i dont know about. it doesn't hurt to ask. u can always have some patience and determination. i never move to solve another problem. untill i've finished solving the 1st one. no matter how much it takes, ask around boards. try finding it in google. whatever works in ur boat!
:) dont give up.

1) take my time, understand what it is asking, understand what it is saying (especially during the install process).
2) study it, Linux is not Windows, Linux is not DOS, but it is not totally obscure either.
3) it is not rocket science, even though it can be used in rocket science.

I found on my first shot at Linux that I was also the unfortunate recipient of some crappy news about my old CD drive -- it decided to die as I was trying to install Linux. Very frustrating and I wasted days trying to get around that one. O.K., you may not have bad hardware, or even bad luck, and you're certainly not stupid -- you had the smarts to come looking for help.

Give it another try, write down/take note of error messages or weird reactions on the screen then search for help on that, either in the doc that came with your distro or in Google or right here at good old JustLinux. Chances are someone else has ahd to deal with just what you are dealing with.

Hand in there :D !!

Boost your ego. Run linux virtually. Run knoppix! Knoppix site (http://knoppix.org)

If it runs on your machine, then you can do a full hardware install. Its really easy.
I can help u

The first time I tried Linux was with Caldera OpenLinux 1.3 with the 1.2 kernel and "CrispLite" desktop -I went around double clicking everything and couldn't figure out why nothing worked. It took me about 3 months to get a sound card working. I also couldn't understand why everything was so slow K6 233/128MB EDO -also somehow Apache was running and I didn't even know it.

Trust me, you are only "dumb" because you used Windows first.

You should learn english first. :D

Anyway, good luck with trying to learn linux though. It's really quite easy, but the initial introduction to it can be difficult.

Ive been trying on and off for 2 years to get linux to work.

If you leave because of some reason or another comeback later because a more new version of linux will come out illimating some of you old problems, thats what I did

And if your having problems with mandrake or something try redhat instead. Dont be afrade to have two or three different OSes on the same computer

Raggie,

Do what I did, I bought Red Hat linux 8 Bible, it has the disks to load it onto your computer, and it's pretty user friendly (I only had a problem with the soundcard, and I came here to get the answer!). Linux takes time to learn - just do what I'm doing and take your time getting familiar with it, look through RH Linux Bible and just tweak it a little bit.

Just think of it as a pilgramage. By journeying back to Windows you will be reminded of why you left it in the first place, and so you'll come back to Linux refreshed and with an open mind. Just think of it as a mental/spiritual cleansing. :D

Which distro are you trying to get going where the install isn't automated. You aren't trying to pass the fourth year finals with Linux from scratch or self compiled and downloaded are you? If you are, you probably need to get your feet wet with a 'first year' distro like Knoppix, or at most, jump to a second year distro like Mandrake, Suse or Redhat.

I was reading through that book, and I really wanted to get it, because it would be such a help with any distro, really. It does have a lot of red hat specific info in it (obviously), but all the commands and how to set things up would help with any distro.

Lot of money, though... ouch.

what would a third year distro be?

what about post-graduate work? or has only Linus achieved that so far....

I'd rate Gentoo and Debian as third year. You are getting into some serious power but need to know what you are doing. Lindows would be UNI pre req.

Post graduate work is kernel programming, running a web server on a 386 efficiently, configuring a 30 node IT network with Linux only, 4 servers, 3 databases, and 29 emplyees who are lost when you flip the mouse over, that kind of thing.

LOL - At work, when I started, I actually saw a girl with the mouse upside down rolling the ball with her finger. She DIDN"T KNOW!

I tried to learn Linux first on an old redhat version that came with the book, Redhat Linux for Dummies. Boy that thing was crap! Took me 5 times to get it installed, it didn't detect anything on my computer and wouldn't connect to the internet. Of course, I'm sure redhat makes better distro's now:) Then I tried SUSE 7.?. I gave up on that too because it was so hard to find video drivers for SUSE, at least for me. I used it for 2 days, (I only had the console mode) and found it too constricting and gave up.

But when I tried one last time with mandrake 7.? it installed and detected my video cards. I was happy at last and began learning the filesystem. Simply because Mandrake was the first distro that installed on my system without throwing up on me, I kept to it.

You might want to try a different distro as well, until you find one that actually installs with some dignity on your system. This is probably the first major step towards getting the motivation up to learn the Linux system. (Getting it installed) Now, I still use Windows for games but I find it more and more annoying and constricting as I get better with Linux. (If Linux supported all the games Windows did, I would trash my Windows in a heartbeat.)

Good luck, remember, Linux is a pain for everyone at first. But it gets better, little by little.

Hey Carrj99,

Maybe YOU should learn English before you tell others to? That's a capital 'E' there, on English.

At the store I go to, they have a huge selection of discounted books. Alot of these books have the cd's with them. Alittle old old but useful and cheep.
Slackware 7 with the cd, $3.99
Linux Desktop Stater Kit with RH, Caldera, Open Linux, TurboLinux, and Suse, $4.99.
Good instructions on installation, and moving on with Linux. Good for beginners like myself.
