BigFatJoe 02-04-2003, 01:27 AM I wouldnt worry about ti too much. The linux kernel was written from scratch. A lot of programs were ported from Unix, but these were also written from scratch. Hence, you would have to argue that the "idea" was yours. This can stretch as far back as the invention of the concept of a microprocessor, etc. :D MS actually uses a lot of borrowed code from unix, so it technically could come under fire easier. they didnt write it from scratch, they simply borrowed. Kinda reminds you of AT&T and BSD battling it out...and hence having to remove a lot of code. But the rewritten code still had the same concepts (mostly). GeekGuy 02-04-2003, 02:39 AM Something can still be copyright and GPL open source. No worries :) bwkaz 02-04-2003, 11:48 AM Linux uses GNU tools (well... mostly; the ones that aren't are almost always BSD). GNU stands for "GNU's Not Unix". The GNU toolset is a reimplementation (from scratch) of most of the original Unix commands, without access to the Unix source. Therefore, most Linux distros do not use any of the (copyrighted) Unix source that these SCO idiots are worried about. Oops. CMonster 02-04-2003, 12:13 PM This is just a little scary if you consider Caldera's past; Caldera has the dubious distinction of being the ones who sued Microsoft over DRDOS -in a long running case, Caldera (which had aquired the rights to DRDOS) aledged that Microsoft had used illegal means (such as false incompatibility messages on MS applications) to scare potential customers away from DRDOS. Eventually Microsoft settled for an undisclosed amount that some estimate at $400,000,000 -pocket change to MS but this kind of litigation could spell disaster for Linux vendors. It seems that Caldera doesn't like actually working and inovating for fair pay but prefers the spoils of war, I guess they aren't making the kind of money they expected by charging $99 seat licenses for Linux desktops. If this is to be their behavior, I say starve them -I'd rather buy Microsoft than anything else from Caldera. Black ball um, and send off an email telling them just what you think.... I say, Caldera, it's time for you to get a real job! justlinux.com
