Why do people complain about X? Its a great window system.

Complaints I hear most are:

X is too slow!
- You configured it wrong.

X is too old!
- Do you think it would have lasted if it sucked?

X is ugly!
- Get a better window manager.

X can't cut and paste!
- Yes it can. RTFM.

X doesn't work!
- It does for me. You're doing something wrong.

X never gets new features!
- What do you call XRnR?

Face it, X is the best windowing system. Period.

Make sure you check out my post.. Who needs X or a GUI :D

I've always seen people on irc brag that they never use X, console is all you need, and anyone who does run X or any other GUI is an absolute retard who shouldnt even be using linux, much less a computer.

Usually, these people are running linux on a 486 because they're to cheap to buy a new PC, or they just feel that even though technology advances, you should still act as though user interfaces have remained unchanged in 30 years.

X has terrible font support and X has too much bloat.

Although X is on rc 4 right now for 4.3, which include Xft2, so the font support will be fixed very soon. And bloat, well it's a freaking gui, it's gonna have bloat.

btw, I do use X, however I'm not sure it's the best out there, unless you are referring to X in general and not XFree86. Metro X and some other one are non-free X windowing systems that are better than Xfree86.

Obviously, the "console linux" users you talk about in your previous message haven't tried it. I spend most of my time in consoles, but I use X for one reason. I can have more consoles on the screen at one time. Maybe they just can't handle more than one simultaneous console, or do they just think its cool to press alt-Fx?

X gobbles up too much resources on my system when running more than two open windows. Doesn't matter if it's a couple of text editors or both XINE and GIMP going full tilt, the same amount is used up :-\

There *should* be competition for X. This is what open-source is all about, right? I did a search, and all alternatives are abandoned.

THIS IS X DICTATORSHIP!
THIS IS X TOTALITARIANISM!
FASCISTS ALL!

*ahem*

Yeah, I think there shousld be an alternative ;)

console gurus use "screen". Once you learn it, you won't know how you got around w/o it.

BTW, carrja99: there's nothing wrong with 486's. What's the point of a P4 2.2 GHz, when you only need it to run as a router, or something. Waste of resources. Console's lots of fun...but sometimes X with a small WM can cheer you up...if nothing else, then by the ability to have a background behind that aterm. I think i use a combination of both, b/c i will use Blackbox, but usually all that;s open is gimp, aterm (or several), and phoenix/dillo. I've never really had a problem with console surfing tho... just a matter of taste. Personally, I like the older hardware. But then, I'm just cr@zy.

I would have to say definitivly say, Gentoo, no Debian, no LFS, no RH, no MDK, no maybe Arch or possibly Peanut, no I would have to say it would be a toss-up between Gentoo and LFS because at least you wouldn't have to worry about setting it up for a day or two and a reprieve is a good thing ( as the governor always says). DO NOT USE Slackware though, cause I can't see a fscking thing

Slackware is awesome with X. You must've done something wrong.

X is so deeply entrenched any replacement would need to make porting easy, and provide backwards compatibility.

My fonts are beautiful in X. I didn't have to work to get them at all.

Don't worry, this question has often been brought up on JL (formerly LNO). No, you don't have X, since the official Linux 4.0 distro has gone under fire for using Unix-patented software. Instead, KDE is a free-standing windowing system, which incorporates all the worst, most bloated option from the original X -- while still managing to run more stabely than any MS Windows (a person who has asked to rename anonymous has linked this stability to a phantom "Linux Colonel"[1])

[1] the "Linux Colonel" was unavailable for comment, but he has been linked to Bin Laden, as well as Saddam more recently. Stay tuned for more info.

It would be nice to see some alternative to X.

And, bah! I keep seeing vbp6us' sig and think I'm seeing "asspainting.com" :( :D

Actually. I think we might want a lean/mean X. Something that requires very little memory/processor to run. For all those little devices out there (PDAs, mobiles etc).
